If you have to drive a decent distance (5+ hours) what time do you leave? Would it be different if it was just you and LO? Do you prefer to drive in the AM, PM or during naptimes? What works best for you/your kids?

When 3 and under we left at naptime if we could.
Now that they are older I try not to rush travel days - we leave after breakfast, whenever that happens to be

We've only done this a few times. We have left in time for the youngest one's morning nap, driven as long as we could until someone started melting down, then stopped for food and running around before continuing the rest of the way.

Our kids travel best when sleeping. Depending on when we wanted to get there we'd leave mid morning, drive until lunch time, stop and eat lunch, then plan for the kids to sleep in the car the rest of the way. OR we'll leave at naptime, drive as long as we can then stop for a bathroom break/running around. One time we had dinner, then put the kids in their pjs and got in the car. That also worked, but we got home REALLY late.

Morning. Either really early or after morning rush hour so we aren't stuck in traffic.
I don't like driving at dusk/night, period (my eyes get tired), and my oldest doesn't necessarily sleep in the car. So night driving isn't helpful for us.

Every other month or so we take a 7-8 hour drive to the grandparents. We always leave around 3-4, stop for dinner / playtime, change into PJs, and then get back in the car and try to drive the rest of the way without stopping. Usually they fall asleep since it lines up with bedtime at that point.
