matador84's thread about boxes got me thinking...if you are moving, when do you start packing? We will be moving in about a month, and I don't even have boxes yet.

I get the big things ready as early as possible.
Packing into boxes I find that I do much better under a real deadline. So basically, the day or two before.

ASAP. As soon as I know I'm moving, I start tackling it. Usually about a month-6 weeks ahead of time. Given, we didn't have kids the last 3 times we moved, so it was pretty easy to pack away most of our stuff and not need it for a month!

I did it last minute and I will never procrastinate about packing again. You should start now!

I start packing weeks in advance. I start with things I don't use on a daily basis like books and out of season clothes. I like to take me time so I can go through everything and donate or throw out what I no longer want.

Blahhh...it is so hard packing with a baby! @bao i think our babies are about the same age...at least mine isn't mobile yet-i don't know about yours!
The good thing is even though we close march 8 and can move after that, we don't have to be out of where we live now until the end of april, so we can work on the house and slowly move things over.

@autumnlove: haha I will start now or this weekend at least.
@matador84: LO is 5.5 months not mobile yet! We will probably get keys mid march, but don't have to be out of here until the end of March, so like you, we can slowly move things over.

I start immediately. I love getting stuff done!! I would be stressing out if I didn't, thinking I would run out of time.

@Bao: I really need to start thinking about this too. We are closing March 7th and I haven't even thought about packing. I bet moving with a baby is a nightmare, I need to get my act together!

@bao i am home with ds today because he is sick and i should totally be packing! maybe i'll drive around in a little bit and hit up some stores for boxes. that will make me feel productive.
i basically have a 4-day weekend! i should be getting a lot done!

I would start now. Get some boxes and start packing away things you're not going to need before you move. I hate packing and moving!

i try to start early too -- even so, it ends up being a bit crazy at the end...
if i start early, i can purge (donate/throw out) as I go, and we end up with less junk at the new place. that's what i love most about starting early! -- unpacking is way easier!

I start early, too. I start with curio items and things I don't use so much. I also start clearing out stuff I'm not willing to move and send them to goodwill or toss them. We do a lot of purging ds's toys whenever we move!

ASAP! You'll want time not only to pack boxes, but to decide what you want to toss out as well. There's nothing worse than moving unnecessary stuff. Especially books.

We've had movers and packers for our last few moves, so we don't do anything except watch them pack and then move everything onto a truck the next day! For our last move stuff went into storage for a few months, so for the few weeks leading up to the packing I laid stuff on a do-not-pack bed and then the day before the packers came I put it all into my car so that they wouldn't accidentally pack it.
ETA: we start giving stuff to goodwill as soon as we know we're moving

I started as soon as I knew the inspection went good. Which was a week after we went into contract. We then closed 4 weeks later.

@plantains: throwing stuff out, breaking down tables, shredding papers... stuff like that?
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
I like to start by just going through stuff and figuring out what I'm not moving-- old clothes I don't wear anymore, duplicate kitchen stuff, furniture you aren't taking, that kind of stuff. That way at least when you do start packing, you know everything comes with.
But I'm a procrastinator too. Can you pack up summer stuff you know you won't need? It's a start at least.
grapefruit / 4671 posts
@mrbee: oh yeah, that stuff always takes longer than I think it will. I'll have to get a move on.
