I stayed home one day this week because I had so much gross happening in my throat that I couldn't swallow or talk. Kind of a good reason to stay home, right? I feel horrible about taking time off when I just got back from maternity leave but, what can I do?
How sick do you have to be to stay home from work?

I stay home when i'm running fever from a virus or very uncomfortable, but not when I just have a runny nose. I know a lot of people don't like to see sick people at work, but I try to be very careful to wash my hands a lot and I have to save those vacation days for when the kids get sick! Also, I always stayed home from work when I had mastitis, so that I could beat it without antibiotics.

When I have a fever or when I know I absolutely would not be able to get any work done or sit upright for a long period of time (either because of a cold or pain). My employer is actually pretty strict about this, they have two young children who are in the office most days and don't like having contagious folks walking around!

I don't have to be very sick at all! Definitely anything contagious or if i just feel kinda shitty, I'll stay home. We get lots of sick time, but I don't seem to get sick often. I just don't mind taking it. I'll also take a "mental health day" if i'm feeling particularly burnt out and I don't have much to do. My company is really big on sending people home if they're sick.
Sometimes i'll just work from home, too, if i feel OK enough to work, but not necessarily come into work.

I only call in if I have the stomach flu or something similar. I wouldn't want to run to the bathroom 20x/day to throw up or, er, get rid of other bodily fluids, if I can help it.
I've been tempted to call in to work for things like horrible menstrual cramps, but I usually just suck it up!!
