GAH I love spam. My mom makes spam musubi sometimes, but when we are truly lazy we make spam fried rice and just crunch in the nori. It is delicious. Spam is also awesome on white bread with mustard.

it is an asian comfort food that came out of the war when food was scarce. koreans used it to make soups where they dumped in everything they had. now it's a part of korean culture. i know hawaiians love their spam too!

@Mrs. Bee: isn't it interesting how different cultures with the same social/economic issues will gravitate toward the same things? I feel like every culture has a dumpling, for example.
Spam was a big thing in my small, super-poor Appalachian town (like I said, they eat it on white bread with mustard). I dunno how we got to eating it with rice....my stepfather was stationed in both Hawaii and Korea so it makes sense for both. My mother's family is from the Philippines so maybe it came from that side?
I've always heard the Hawaiian fixation with spam is because they are an island culture so it was something they could have transported over to them. So is that the same as the Australian obsession with Vegemite?
In my hometown people also eat Vienna Sausages (my husband remembers eating them with slices of cheese and peanuts). A friend from Puerto Rico told me that was a comfort food for him as well!
EDIT: haha, not nation but culture! I guess they were once independent though....!

Maybe 2 years ago when we went out for Hawaiian BBQ...I love spam!
I used to eat it a lot more when I was single..love kimchi fried rice with spam too!
It's interesting that people think spam is gross...kind of like how people get grossed out by bologna or hotdogs...I love spam and hotdogs (polish dogs) but I don't think I could eat a bologna sandwich

Never tried it. The thought of canned meat disgusts me, though, so there's no way I'd try it at home. Maybe if I was in Hawaii and ordered a dish with it in it, and didn't have to see if come from a can, I could get it down.

I never have. Surprising though because I grew up on hot dogs and KD.

2005. I was on a trip for my company in Austin, MN, the home of Spam. aka: Spamtown USA. Serious. I went through their factory tour and got a sample at the end. ::shudder:: I do not like.
