I think for a special occasion probably 13/14. Regularly 16.

Small amounts at 12/13. That's when I really started wanting to wear it.

I wasn't allowed to wear whatever makeup I wanted regularly until I started high school, and I think I'll do the same for my own daughter.
Special occasion maybe a little earlier. Something like a lip gloss, probably whenever she asks? But I grew up in the age of lip smackers so maybe that won't be a "thing" for her.
And I guess for dance/theatre that'll be whenever it's needed if she's into those things like I was. But then unlike my own mom, when she's actually allowed to wear makeup regularly I'll SHOW her how to apply real life makeup so she's not walking around with stage makeup for the first year... Ugh so bad!

@Sapphiresun: haha I'm so not a makeup person so if my daughter is we might have to YouTube!

When she starts high school. I want to take her to a make-up counter and have them show her how to apply it. Prior to that, I think lip gloss should be enough. My mom originally refused to let us wear any make-up at all until we were 16, but when I was 14 she broke down and bought us some (I was sooooo angry because my sister was 12 and got make-up) after she kept catching me using hers.

She can wear flavored chap sticks whenever, lip gloss at 12/13. That's as far as I can imagine it
I'm not sure when she'll be allowed to wear real make-up. I don't want her hiding it like I did, but at the same time, I won't encourage it.

I was allowed to wear lip gloss around middle school - so maybe we can start with that and see how it goes.

Middle school (not heavy). I really want to take her to get a make-up lesson before she starts wearing it.

My mother started letting me wear a little bit of light make-up at 14 (some tinted lip gloss and occasionally some blush and mascara). I was allowed to start wearing small amounts of eye shadow in high school. I think if I have a daughter I'll probably follow the same rules.

I was allowed to wear it for play whenever, and I'm not even sure when I was "allowed" to wear it out of the house...I started to at the end of middle school here and there as far as I can remember. So about the same time for her.

Mascara starting in middle school. Probably not full on makeup till high school. Lipgloss whenever.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@locavore_mama: haha, I had to use YouTube to learn how to apply makeup because my mom never taught me! I mean, I guess some things are self-explanatory, but how to apply mascara without clumping was NOT!

Probably high school. Lipgloss and maybe mascara in middle school.
I really don't want to think about her being old for it yet!

@Adira: I have YouTubed and looked at online tutorials and the art of applying eyeshadow on Asian eyes totally escapes me!

If she wants to, and in moderation appropriate for her age. I only wear make-up on special occasions or when I go out (which, for us, IS a special occasion.) So it's not like she will grow up in a house where I put on make-up just to leave the house. My mom was that way. She would even say how ugly she was without make-up and how she didn't want a single person seeing her without it, even when she is working in the yard... I swore I would never be like that. Both for myself and for my daughter.

@locavore_mama: Eyeshadow still escapes me! I feel like I have these weird eyes that I can't figure out WHAT I'm supposed to do with them! I pretty much avoid eyeshadow at all costs, haha.

Middle school...that is when my mom caved and let me wear the purple eye liner.
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
probably 14? That's high school, right? I wear makeup every day, so it's going to come up. I remember when I wore glitter and colored lip balm in middle school and that wasn't a big deal.
pomegranate / 3729 posts
Middle school, but I plan to show her the right way to wear daily makeup. And, also let her do it different and fun on weekends or to special events. I love makeup and can't wait to share that with her.

@locavore_mama: @Adira: I should probably start you tubing videos because I'm clueless. I always want to wear makeup but I haven't the slightest how to apply it, and feel like I look like a crazy person applied my makeup haha
I probably won't let her until 13-14..

Middle school. I love makeup, I wear it daily and I feel like Im pretty damn good at it. Im professionally trained in theatrical And special effects makeup. I cant wait to teach her.

I hated wearing make up and my mom basically sat me down in high school and showed me how to do it. I felt like a clown lol i was a tom boy though! If my daughter wants to at 14 I will let her but it needs to be light and natural.

I started wearing light makeup in 6th grade--that seems like a good age to me. That's when I started getting blemishes and being self-conscious about my skin (well, and when I wanted to start wearing makeup in general). My mom took me to a makeup counter and they showed me how to apply it--I'd like to do the same if I have a daughter!

Probably 12 or 13. I remember my mom taking me to the clinique counter around then

@sarbear: ha! If our girls grow up to be friends I can just imagine double date night. Although according to DH she's never dating.
pomelo / 5093 posts
Whenever she wants. My mother really shamed me for wanting to try makeup, so I'll let my daughter try it out judgement free whenever she's interested. It's her face.

I'm not totally decided... maybe high school (is that 14-15) but only small things like lip gloss, a light eye shadow? and 16 for the rest.My mom was pretty strict about it and I started wearing it at 16 without her permission and she was upset... but it didn't stop me
I think after a few months she decided to just let it go.
grapefruit / 4823 posts
@locavore_mama: haha DH said she's never dating either...poor girls haha

Once she gets her period and only after I've taken her to get professional lessons so she knows how to correctly apply it.
grapefruit / 4582 posts
I don't know. I feel like I wore concealer and mascara in middle school. I don't wear any make up now (except for special occasions) so she won't see me doing it often. I will probably wait for her to ask me about it and see what's happening then.
wonderful pea / 17279 posts
I wore some make up during my "rebellious" year at 14. I wish my parents told me no because I looked ridiculous.
Colored lip gloss and nail polish in middle school...Maybe more in high school 15/16.

I would like to say 9th grade, but I think I'll also have to take into consideration when everyone else at her school starts wearing it. I remember how mean girls can be and I wouldn't want her to be made fun of for being the only one not wearing make up. My mom wouldn't let me shave my legs until I was 13, and everyone else that I knew started before me. I was in a lot of sports and I was always so, so embarrassed to show my 'hairy' legs. I think the makeup issue could be similar.

@sarac: I really like your answer. I always felt a lot of shame due to the way my mom responded to some of the things I wanted and I think I'm still learning how that shame molded my own thoughts about myself.
pomelo / 5321 posts
I'm pretty sure we're done after two so I may never have a girl. If i did, I'd like to say I would make them wait until high school. I'd probably be flexible though and allow it in 7th or 8th grade. I remember being that age and all of my friends started wearing it. I'd teach her how to wear it though and how to make it look nice, not heavy.
