I bring all of my own everything, I do not understand the concept of packing light.
Usually, I bring Color Wonder markers and stickers. I let my son pack a bag of things he wants to bring as well, that ownership helps him feel invested in going somewhere.
Other ideas include those magnetic erase boards, magnetic story books, etc. I am a big fan of kits.

We have friends who are childless and the few times we've been to theirs for a meal, they have usually had something that DS would eat, although one time it was on the spicier side and he just had dessert.
I let him bring a few small toys and I also take the iPad with films loaded.

This happened last week, we brought the portable DVD player and a tote of toys she packed. She was more itrested in playing on the swing set they had in their back yard (left from previous owners.)
