Alright, I'm taking the plunge! I'm getting my hair cut!!! I haven't cut it in years, and its over halfway down my back. I'm still going to leave it below my shoulders, but it will still be like.....5-6 inches!
I don't have a salon obviously that I normally go to, but I really don't want to spend a fortune on a haircut. (no color). Would you trust just going to one of those cheaper hair salons like Cost Cutters, or would you go to a regular salon?

i would go to a real salon for a drastic change. if it's cut well it will fall so much better with you having to do less work. if you're not coloring it, you won't have to go as often so it's really not that $$$ and hair cuttery/ cost cutters/ those types of places aren't that much less expensive. maybe find a groupon or living social deal for a nice salon near you.

@mrs. bird: Thanks! That's kind of my thoughts too because I'm pretty sure most of the high cost is when you color and get high lights. I'm looking on Groupon now!

@MrsBrewer: i've been for waxing and massages, but i wouldn't let them touch my hair other than to blow it out. sure someone is supervising, but once they cut it, there's no going back! one of my BFFs is my hair stylist and he used to tell me horror stories of ppl getting their hair destroyed by his classmates in beauty school. but then again he was amazing so you just don't know who you'll get.

@MrsBrewer: if you go on craigslist, high end salons also will list nights where they need hair models and you get the cut for free. but you have to let them do they cut they need to do. something else to look into.

I used to go to the cheaper hair places and was happy with the results. Then I got a gift card to a salon/spa, and was thrilled with the results! They do amazing things with my hair for less than $50, well worth it to me every 2-3 months. I felt so good the first time I went back after the baby

Yea I go to fantastic sams and get it cut for $14 lol I've never had a bad cut yet and they do a marvelous job thinning my hair outwhich no one else does.

@MrsBrewer: If its a big cut I would go to a salon. I think they do a much better job layering my hair than the other stop in places.

@MrsBrewer: I go to this place called Heads Up on the south side (might be in Greenfield? It's on Layton Ave.) and I pay $40 for a cut. They do a great job and its well worth the $. Just in case you need any local suggestions

Alright I might be asking a ton of dumb questions.....how about salons in malls? For example there's a Regis salon in a mall near me. Yay or nay?

I get a Groupon for a nice salon (I check their Yelp reviews before buying).
Been happy so far! Great cuts and I pay about half the price.

I've gone regularly to a beauty school and it was awesome. I stopped going a few years ago because it got popular and took a month to get an appointment. It was cheap for a good cut.

I just used a Groupon for a nice salon by me, and the girl did a great job! It was $29 for a haircut and conditioning treatment, usually valued at $80.

I pay $30+ tip for my hair cuts and it's at a salon... I've gone to Fantastic Sams/Great Clips in the past and they always always always mess up. Last time I went to GC, she took off 2"+ than what I asked her too! Many times it's crooked as well... you get what you pay for 
I say find a salon - many have great introductory coupons/prices too! I once found a local salon that said $25 off for new clients!

I always go to First Choice for haircuts. Can't beat $17. Plus, they have all had to go to school to do this. I've gone to salons and got bad haircuts and gone to cheap places and got great ones, it can go both ways. It just depends who the stylist is.
Hair schools can be cheap but I think that is more of a risk. Plus you have to have more time as it takes longer since they are just learning and the teacher has to check after each step they do.
I like the idea of looking for a groupon, so you can go somewhere fancy and not pay the price.

If you're only getting a cut, I would definitely splurge on a nicer salon. I pay a lot for my color so I try to watch the cost of a cut. But more often than not, when I go to SuperCuts, it ends up crooked/uneven. Not worth the money I'm saving!
