At first I think girl because it's become quite popular for girls in the past few years. I still think it is a great name for a boy as well though.

I think girl because it was my top pick for our LO but DH thinks boy. We chose Ava instead as a happy medium.

Typically girl but now Avery on Nashville makes me think guy too so I say either way!

Girl. Just because the woman on my soap is named Avery

I have a female cousin named Avery but it can go both ways.
@T.H.O.U.: I thought the same thing at first but then I remembered that Avery is actually his last name.

I think girl, but didn't always. I had an Avery in my class when I was student teaching and he was a boy. I also love Charlotte's Web and the brother's name is Avery.

I think it's gender neutral and can go either way. One of the hot Dr's on Grey's Anatomy is named Avery.

I think girl, but wouldn't be surprised if it was a boy. As a teacher, Avery has mostly been a girl name in my classes.

I used to know one Avery, who was born around 2000, and it was a brand-new name to me (she's a girl!)... and then two people I went to high school with had babies back-to-back, both girls, and named them both Avery!

Avery was traditionally a boys name long ago but now its becoming more common as a girls name... I think girl.

All the Averys I know are boys. But I think it can work as girl name, as well.

@T.H.O.U.: I think that's how DH came up with the idea that it is a boy name

I've seen it used both ways. It's on out list for a future girl name, I love that name!
We don't watch Grey's, but are big 30 Rock fans.

I've seen it both ways, but I chose girl because my niece's name is Avery

Girl - but that's mainly bc I only know one person with that name and they are a girl

@T.H.O.U.: @mauri: Avery is actually his last name; his first name is Jackson. Clearly I watch too much GA!

I really like the name Avery for a girl! It was on our short list!

Thanks, bees! I also really super love the name! However, DH and I have been at odds about a boy name starting with "A" (even though we said we'd stop discussing it until we know the sex!) and when he suggested Avery I got so excited that I didn't dare say I always thought it was a girl name! It looks like most of you think "girl" as well!
I think I could probably get over that, though, because technically it can also be a boy's name and I do love it. And also, because it's the first thing DH has come up with other than Abraham!

@MamaMagpie: what about Alexander, Alex? If you like Avery, looks like its commonplace for boys name now....=)

I think girl, but I really think of the sticker/label company Avery Dennison, lol.

@tequiero21: that's a great name, but we already have and Alex in the family

I grew up with a couple of Averys... They were boys! But I also had a coworker name her daughter Avery. It's hard for me to shake the idea that it's a boy name since I knew 2 growing up. I have this struggle with Taylor too. There were three Taylors in my school and they were all boys! But it's becoming a very popular girl name.

I may be dating myself but I think of Murphy Brown. She had a baby boy named Avery.

@MamaMagpie: We were going to name our baby (if it is a girl) Avery (it's always been a personal fave) but DH is firm about our second choice being what we name our future daughter. I have friends who see Avery as a boy name though (as we've had this conversation a few times) and I think it can really go both ways.

I think of a boy because my first crush in elementary school was a little boy named Avery. The only Avery's I've known IRL were all boys.
