Sometimes I lie and say I'm busy and tell them if they want help they need to wait. It sometimes gives them time for one more try.

I reference a time when I remember him doing it! "Oh I know you can put on your shoes, you did it this morning! Do you mean you don't WANT to put them on? If you'd like help, you can ask me nicely; I'd be happy to help you."

When she whines I tell her I can't hear whining.
Sometimes it's just power she needs, and getting us to do something for her is a form of having power. So I keep calm and tell her I know she can do it, and mommy will watch her do it.

I give her an example of when something was hard for me to learn and how I felt and what I did and how it turned out! Sometimes they just need a little empathy to get going. And a funny joke, depending on their sense of humor.
