I'm about to start getting some basics for our baby girl! I didn't buy nearly enough NB size for DS, so I won't make that mistake this time around.
Where's the best place to start? Carter's? There is so much fun girl stuff!

Our DD was teeny, so Carter's offered the best fit in the newborn stage. Now that she's got a little more meat on her, I like BabyGap and Gymboree.

Baby gap, Carter's, petit bateau for onesies and Ralph Lauren. I wait for the huge sales where the clothes are marked down then 40-50% on top of that. You have to check the sites pretty frequently though. If you havea TJ Maxx or Marshall's nearby you can usually find some great deals there.

I like Carter's for newborn stuff since they outgrow it pretty quickly. But Baby Gap is my obsession for baby girl clothes!

I'm a Baby Gap addict! But I think the first 2 months, Carter's fit the best and most practically. Sleepers, footed pants, etc.
Also love Tea Collection, Ralph Lauren, and Juicy Couture. I like cute, but also comfortable and soft clothes.Just about now (7-8 months) she's starting to fit more fun fashion-y stuff, so I'm starting to like H&M and Zara too.

Baby gap and Zara when they are older 9m+ And Carter's for younger.

I still do carters, even though I have a girl.
But sometimes babygap/gymboree/janie and jack on sale for pictures or what not/ ON...although I'm not sure which ones of those sell nb. Oh and osh kosh overalls, but again not for newborn. Kohls and macys sometimes have good deals. H&M sometimes has cute stuff too. There are so many options!

Gymboree seriously has the most stupidly adorable NB clothes.

@matador84: I thought baby gap ran really big, even nb! I'd go with carter's nb for the early days. O was 7 lb 10 oz and just under 19", and fit in Carter's nb for 6-8 weeks (she was actually up to 9 lbs by 1 month, and 12 lbs by 2 months).
at 13 months, she fits in 6-12 or 12-18 (outerwear and jeans) gap.

When she was a baby, I preferred comfy, soft and easy to put on clothes. Carter's, BabyGap and whatever else my mom would buy for her.
Now that she's a toddler, I still prefer soft, comfy, practical clothes for at home, but I love how I can start really shopping for cute outfits for her and get some real use out of them. My faves are: Next, BabyGap (only on sale), and local stores like H&M, KappAhl, Lindex.

I love Carter's (and Just one You by Carter's at target/Walmart) for newborn. It fits my string bean the best, and I love that the snaps on the footed sleepers go down to the ankle on both sides.

I like the Children's Place. They have some unique looking prints at their store, and they have good sales. (They're having a huge one right, now. I just bought DS a bunch of stuff, but I bought a bunch of stuff for S there, also)
