Is it safer in the back center seat? Right now I have it behind the passengers seat but I am thinking middle is better? I drive an SUV (jeep Cherokee) if that makes any difference.

Depends what is easier for you. Is there LATCH in the middle, or is it a belt install?

I'm wondering this too, because I have a mini van with two bucket seats and then a bench seat in the back. Do I put it on one of the side seats, or way in the back so it can be in the center?

we have ours in the center, ive alwys heard that was the safest option but i always wonder wht you do if you have twins or 2 kids! like how do you choose who goes in the middle?!?!

@Arden: When we use my parent's mini van, we put the car seat in the bucket seat behind the driver. Both sides have the sliding doors. Getting into the car with a car seat is a pain, I much prefer just to be able to stand and lean into the car.
The center is the safest, but if you have a kid in a convertible and a baby in a bucket, the covertible should go in the middle because it is the least protected seat of the two.

DS was in the middle. He is now behind the driver, and DD (in infant seat) is behind the passenger.

We have a Jeep Patriot and always put the carseat in the middle. According to our carseat info, the vehicle manual should tell you where the best place is for your carseat but I've never checked for sure.

We read the manual and it said to put it on the side.

What @looch: said.
Ours is in the middle seat in our sedan and it's such a pain. I imagine that it would be even more so in an SUV. I would probably put it behind the driver's seat. That is, if it worked with LATCH, etc.

I think the middle seat is the safest but I've always put ours on the side b/c it's easier to get them in and out and has latch, especially right after birth. The middle seat usually doesn't have latch; and although the seat belt is just as safe I'd rather use the latch. I have an SUV so getting to the middle seat can be a pain. But, for me, I think either way for me getting a car seat into a middle seat is a pain.

Its different for each car. We decided to install it on the side, behind the passenger seat

we have ours in the center because i always thought that was the safest. but once you have more than one i doesn't matter anyways.

Ditto to what many people have said. Check with your carseat manual and your auto manual to see what they recommend.
Also, remember that you need enough space between the driver and passenger front seats and the carseat in the back. Neither my husband or I could drive comfortably with the carseat behind the driver (or the middle as that would affect how far back the driver seat could be positioned) so it went on the passenger side in both cars.
We do have smaller sedans though, so if you have a roomier SUV or you and your husband aren't too tall you have more options.

@looch: I haven't checked yet. There better be a latch in the middle!
@Sweet T: Does your Jeep Pat have a middle latch? I think I need to run out and grab my manual from the glove compartment and figure mine out.
Thanks ladies....I think i'll try it in the middle and end up moving it to behind the passenger seat if it gets super annoying.
But it snows A LOT in Michigan and accidents are very common so I think safety might trump comfort for this first winter at least.

We have ours in the middle but it is really tough to get the car seat in the car.
Our middle seat also doesn't have latch but the side seats do.

@stargal: We have DD in the center now, but now that DS is due in just a few months I was wondering that so much too!! But I heard that you put whichever seat is less protected in the middle (so the convertible would go middle I think....) but we haven't had to do this yet.
