I just close the bathroom door (with LO in the bathroom). She plays with toys in there, plays peek-a-boo with the shower curtain, reads a book, etc. she's 18 months, and this is what we've always done.

When DS was an infant I out him in his lounger in the bathroom. When he was too big for that around 9 months, I put him on the bathroom floor with toys. That continued until he was a little over 2 years and figured out how to open the nth room door. Now, he's almost three and I just shower with the bathroom door open and he comes and goes as he pleases. FWIW, I know he isn't going to get into anything dangerous or start coloring on the walls or something. In almost a year of this, he has never had an incident.

When A was a newborn I used to jump in the shower as soon as she went down for a nap in the morning, once she got older but not mobile I would pop her under her play gym right outside the bathroom door. At six months or so I started leaving her in the cot with toys (she was happy long enough for me to shower!) and now she's fourteen months I just shut some doors so she can only hang out where I let her
