We currently have two homes and 3 cars! We're renting out our townhouse so that covers the mortgage there, but we still have our new house and lots of repairs (like the new roof that we need). We just bought a mini van and are in the process of selling our old car- so we have the mini van car payment.

We go out to eat a lot because I get crazy migraines and don't feel well enough to cook, plus I just like getting out of the house.

And medical bills are pretty big around here. I get migraines and hubby has crohns, so we're always having hospital bills and lots of prescription meds to buy.

Rent is a huge expense for us. We also go out to eat a lot--once or twice a week, and maybe we order in another night. We also spend a lot of money on groceries, because we shop at whole foods a lot. I've really been trying to cut back on clothes and shoes/accessories, and with the exception of two pairs of shoes I've bought this year, i've been pretty good!

@mrbee: We're moving to brooklyn in April! We're so excited--and hopefully it will be a teeny tiny bit cheaper than living in manhattan. At a minimum, we won't be taking as many cabs!

Morgage loan, student loan payments, & car payments are our biggest expenses. My hubby's CC isn't the cheapest either.

We are lucky to still have enough spending cash to be able to go out to eat on the weekends and a couple times a week for lunch. I have cut out a lot of shopping, but am goign to have to purchase some maternity clothes/bigger clothes for work and daily life. My stuff is getting a little snug.

Rent, then car/insurance/maintenance/gas, then health insurance.

Most of our money goes to:
• Mortgage and related expenses
• Student loans
• Savings
• Food/booze
• Cable/cell phones
And daycare, once LO is here. We don’t have any consumer debt (no cc debt, cars are paid for), so that helps.

Our biggest expense is rent. It's about 30% of our take home income, which is on the high end of what I've seen recommended. Other than that, we put a good chunk of our income toward credit card payments - we are trying to get out of debt. After that, it's groceries, gas and eating out. We spend a lot in gas because we commute, and we eat out way more than we really should, but it's our only true luxury.

Rent is by far and away the biggest expense. when LO gets here daycare will be about equal! Live in NY can be the worst. We are planning on buying a place in BK in the next year and a half or so, so undoubtedly our mortagage will be even worse than what we pay in rent right now. I shudder to think about it.

We hardly ever buy "frivolous" stuff.

Er. I wouldn't be so sure of that! My friend lives in LA and I think it's just as if not more than Manhattan!

Our three biggest expenses are home (mortgage payment + condo fees), tithing (for church), and transportation (insurance + gas + public transportation).

Our biggest expense is our homes I think. We also just added healthcare for our nanny and that is very expensive! More so than I originally though but a healthy nanny is a happy nanny so I think it pays for itself. Besides that I would say most of our nest biggest expense goes to travel for my husband's job.

I agree that NY rent and mortgage is awful! I'm from the midwest and you could get a mansion for what you pay here!

i would say mortgage and my husbands car payment.

I've been thinking about this lately, since once baby comes and I cut back on working, our income will drop significantly. Right now we pay an extra $600 per month on our mortgage, that will probably end soon.
