It only fit in the middle seat, or I would have to move the passenger seat up so far it was pretty uncomfortable. Plus middle is safest if you can get a good install there. Our car did not have latch at all (it was a 2000) so we did it with the seat belt. It was a huge pain to install it!
Now we have an SUV with latch and will have the convertible behind the driver seat and the infant seat behind the passenger, both with latch (until C outgrows the weight limit for latch).

We initially had installed in passenger side seat with LATCH but when we went to get it inspected they said middle seat was safer (and also have us more leg room). We needed to do seatbelt install for middle seat. Only slightly harder to install and you only have to do it once!

We got ours inspected at the monthly car seat inspection event at one of the local police stations. They had us install it behind the passenger side seat with LATCH as the safest. That's funny it's different than what they told @sapphire! I thik as long as you do it correctly, that's what is most important.

We couldn't do a middle seat latch installation, so we did behind the passenger seat with latch in both of our cars. Convertible is installed the same way.

Middle with seat belt, only option in our truck. We took a safety course, free at fire station for installing.

Behind the driver seat with latch. It was behind driver seat because my car has a weird lump in the center in the back and even though I took it to a fire department to help with installation, the fireman couldn't get it to install safely/flatly in the center. Latch because that is easy.

We have captain chairs in the middle row of our minivan. M's seat is installed behind me because D has to be on the passenger side for drop off and pickup at school.
We use latch.

Seatbelt install begins driver seat. Not sure why he did it that way

In one car it's behind the passenger with LATCH, in the other it's in the middle with the belt, per the safety inspector.

In dh's car it was behind the passenger side w latch. In mine it was behind the passenger w belt.

Infant seat was latch behind driver in my car and latch behind passenger in DH's car. Convertible now is latch behind passenger in both cars so DH can still drive both cars.
New baby will be latch behind driver in my car and not sure about DH's car. We will need to try different things to see what works.

We have 2 bases and one is latch and the other is belt. The belt we had done by the fire department because we couldn't get it right enough.

Any reason people pick behind passenger versus driver? Is it a leg room issue? We have space behind either, just didn't know if one was safer than the other?
cantaloupe / 6923 posts
I have one behind the driver and one behind the passenger. And for some reason they both have latches and belts. That's how the carseat lady on YouTube installed it?

Middle with seatbelt. It feels safer in my head and my car is old and doesn't have latches.

Behind the passanger seat installed with latch.
It was first installed with the seatbelt in the same location because BIL did it for us and that's how he gets the best install.
I had moved the base to my parents car for a few weeks so when I reinstalled I used latch as it was easier for me.

Behind passenger seat with latch. Our car is smallish and doesn't have latch for the middle seat, so we put it on the passenger side for leg room.

@LindsayInNY: I think most people do passenger side for driver leg room. I have heard that actually the driver is slightly safer because the driver instinctively protects himself? Not sure if that is true though.
Also if you parallel park, having it on the passenger side means you are on the sidewalk taking it or and putting it in, vs standing in the street to do it.
@anonysquire: I would double check on the seatbelt and LATCH thing. Every thing I have ever read says only use one or the other- using both makes it less safe (there is meant to be some movement in a crash by the seat, so baby doesn't take the brunt of it, and using both changes the points and direction of the force). Definitely do a little research!

Behind the passenger seat so we could use the latch.

I chose passenger side so that I could see him easier when I turned around. It was 1st installed at our local safety council. The lady there showed me everything to be aware of. I relayed that info to my DH for future installations.

I have also heard driver is safer than passenger side because the driver instinctively protects herself.
We have both installed in the middle using Latch.

With my first two it was LATCH behind the passenger. With my 3rd it will be LATCH behind the driver. I wanted to use LATCH and our car seat was not compatible with the spacing for the middle seat.
If you only have one child and could get a good install, the middle is the safest. If you have more than one child than the least protected goes in the middle (example is one if FF). After that the outboard seats are both equally as safe. In addition, as long as the seat is installed properly both LATCH or belt install are equally as safe as one another. You can also do the European belting path if you are installing an infant seat without the base, where the shoulder belt wraps around the infant seat and and the lap portion of the belt goes in like normal.
grapefruit / 4681 posts
@anonysquire: It is LATCH or belt, not both! There are only a few seats that allow both to be used at the same time. Clek Foonf is one of them, so unless you have that seat and are FF with a child between 20-65 lb in it, I would remove either the belt or LATCH reinstall and pick one.
Info on the foonf in case that's what you do have: http://clekinc.com/support/documents/clekus000066/
@LindsayInNY: I did behind passenger because it was easier for me to reach back there if needed. Neither side is safer over the other.
Also there are weight limits to lower LATCH anchors which is something new I just learned and something to keep in mind as LO grows. Both your car and car seat manuals will specify what the combined child + seat weight limit is. After that point you have to switch to a belt install anyway (newer seats have the weight limited printed on them...it's more for when child is older and not really an issue in an infant seat).

@Foodnerd81: @anbanan15: ok now I'm freaking out. It's the latch under the front seats, not on their own seats?
grapefruit / 4681 posts
@anonysquire: are you talking about the LATCH that is at the bottom of the seat or are you talking about the top tether anchor? The part that you are saying is installed with latch is that coming from the top of the car seat or the base?
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
@anonysquire: this picture shows the LATCH connectors.
Nothing to do with the harness that holds baby into the seat, it's what is attaching the seat to the car.
grapefruit / 4681 posts
@Foodnerd81: @anonysquire: I'm wondering if she has the actual seat attached with the belt and then the top tether attached to the driver/passenger seat and that is want she is calling latch? Which in that case, if the seat is attached with the belt and is also top tethered and the seat and car allow a top tether RF seat, then that is allowed. If the seat is attached with both the belt and the lower anchor (LATCH), then no that is not allowed unless it is a foonf. Also interested in what seat it is.
ETA: I think the Nuna Pipa is the other seat that allowed LATCH and belt install at the same time. Let me double check... <--- yes it is the Nuna Pipa and FF Foonf that allow both used together

We use LATCH on the drivers side because we parked on a long driveway and had no immediate easy to passenger side.

@anbanan15: @Foodnerd81: @Foodnerd81: @anbanan15: it's a combi cocoro. It's has a clip with a long belt to the front seat. It isn't clipped to its own seat.
watermelon / 14467 posts
Ours was behind the passenger seat and installed with LATCH. I've done a baseless seatbelt install too and it was no big deal.
@anonysquire: So is it installed with the seat belt in its own seat and then tethered from the top? You will want to make sure that Combi allows for rear-face tethering. Most seats don't allow for that and you use the top teacher when they are forward-facing.
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
@anonysquire: ok I think that's the tether- which I have no idea about but I think @anbanan15: does. So only the seatbelt is attaching it to the back seat that it is resting on, right?
cantaloupe / 6923 posts
@avivoca: @Foodnerd81: yes. I watched some installation video on YouTube from the carseat lady. I'll find my manual before we use it again. Thanks!

Initially I had the infant seat in the middle with the latch, I didn't realize that in most cars you can't use the latch system in the middle since you are "borrowing" a latch from each seat. So then I put it behind the passenger because I think it is safer to get in/out without traffic going by (like on the drivers side).
