We are talking aobut taking a long weekend trip to Boston later this summer. Obviously, the best place to stay would be right downtown by Faneuil Hall, but those places are pretty pricey. We plan to drive in, but then hopefully leave our car and walk or use public transportation to get around. So we're willing to be a bit farther out, as long as it's accessible. Cambridge? Up by the airport? Boston locals, help me out!

I used to go to Boston University, if you stay in Allston or Brookline, there is still T access into city center. Cambridge is def another option.

Try looking up the John Jeffries house in beacon hill. It's very affordable but may be booked up. Location is fantastic - walking distance to everything but also right by the T and beacon hill is so cute.

We stay by the airport- there's a Hampton Inn there that has a shuttle to drop you off and pick you up 24 hr a day at the subway. It's really convenient

We don't travel a lot so when we do, we tend to splurge a bit. We stayed at the Millenium and had a room overlooking Fanueil Hall this past November. We actually were upgraded and the room was amazing! I think we paid $287.00 for 1 night.
I'm sure there are plenty of other more practical places to stay, though. My sister likes the Marriott Custom House, I believe those are suite type rooms with kitchenettes.

I wouldn't stay by the airport, there's nothing else up that way to see.
Cambridge has great hotels close to everything - what of you want to do/see?

If you stay in Brookline (there's a holiday inn centrally located and another hotel I can't recall the name) it's right on the C line and convenient to getting into the city.
I would just Priceline a hotel!

The Royal Sonesta in Cambridge often has good rates that include parking-- my parents have stayed there, when I lived downtown. There isn't a ton right there, other than a big mall, but it's close to a lot of things and the T is very close. HOWEVER, I can't remember if the T is wheelchair/stroller accessible at that stop.
It's also worth checking the hotels in Back Bay near the Hynes Convention center-- there are so many right there, sometimes the rates are low if there is no conference in town. MIL has found good rates at the Sheraton, and it's walking distance to a ton of stuff. But, they probably charge a fortune for parking.
I agree with @rachiecakes: , there isn't much by the airport, and some of the "airport" hotels are actually a good bit further out still. If you were planning to drive in, it would be OK but not ideal, but if you want to walk or take the T, it's not a good option.

Also if you put in your dates and find specific hotels with decent deals but aren't sure about the location, I'm sure us locals could tell you yay or nay. The price will change so much depending on dates.

Yay! Well Cambridge would still be pricey depending on where you are. The further out you go, the cheaper it would probably be. Places you can easily drive to and take the train in would be Alewife (at the edge of Cambridge) or Quincy. Those two are on the red line so you can just park and hop on a train.

I would suggest the Seaport area, there are lots of restaurants down there but it is easily accessible by foot or by T (Silver Line). There are a few new hotels that just opened and that might drop the prices as long as there isn't a convention.
Also, check jetsetter, groupon, etc. because there are frequently nice boutique hotels on sale through those sites, particularly Kimpton brand hotels, which are very nice and modern or the Boston Harbor Hotel comes up as well.
I think Priceline is another good option because Boston is so small, you aren't going to end up too far from anything unless you pick a suburb.
