We always go to Daniel for our anniversary. It's such amazing food and just perfect service. Another great choice if you want a slightly smaller restaurant (but also amazing food) is Annisa.

I am pretty much all about Gramercy Tavern for all things. It's just so lovely and the food is a delight.

@Beehive: haha, I took my then boyfriend to Daniel for his 30th birthday dinner. He took me to some walk in joint in Chinatown. But the meal was memorable, even if the return was less so.
Watching this thread for other suggestions, it's been about 8 years since I've lived in New York.

@Looch: That's so funny. My problem is I never know the great walk in type places in Chinatown!
As long as we're talking about "nice" places, I should also mention our other absolute favorite - Corton, in Tribeca. We go there for my birthday and DH's birthday every year.

Since you like pork, maybe Momofuku Ko? It used to be ridiculously hard to get a reservation (maybe not as much since it's been around longer) so even just that aspect may make it special.

Oooh I second Daniel! Such a great special occasion place. So classy and elegant.
I haven't been but, Blanca (in Brooklyn) is definitely the hot reservation this year. I think you get 24 small plates with their unique tasting menu and they only serve 30 people a night.
Blue Hill is delicious farm-to-table. We actually went there for our anniversary last summer. It's on a really charming block in the West Village.
ABC Kitchen is also great. This thread is making me hungry!
Also, Geoffry Z is a parent at the school where I work! So fun seeing him in his colorful shirts. I am too scared to say much to him after watching him on Chopped, but I hear he is very nice.

If you're looking for once in a lifetime and are willing to spend a lot, haha, Eleven Madison Park is the top for me. DH and I went last year and it was to die for. The food, service, atmosphere were incredible but we definitely saved for it! I've also enjoyed The Modern a lot

@Regberadaisy: You might be thinking of somewhere else... Daniel is more traditional French, Annisa is modern American and Corton is more modern French and a little molecular.

I had a wonderful dinner at Mas (farmhouse). The meal was wonderful (several course pre fixe) without being over the top filling and it's definitely a unique spot (farm to table). We liked Gramercy Tavern - DH had a good pork chop there...I didn't find it so romantic, but we were there with a couple so that could be why! I also once did a special dinner at Picholine, which was amazing, but it was years ago and i have no idea if the quality has remained. If you're really looking to go all out, try Eleven Madison or Per se, but i haven't been to either, so i can't speak for them

Daniel is great! We got the chef's table for my 30th bday and sat above the kitchen. It was fun to chit chat with Daniel himself! That would be perfect for your anniversary.

If you like seafood, Le Bernardin is pretty amazing. We just went for dh's bday and we loved it.

@regberadaisy: What kind of food do you like? Do you like great seasonal ingredients that are prepared well but on the simpler side? Or do you like complex dishes? I highly, highly recommend ABC Kitchen for awesome seasonal fare (and a celebrity spotting or two if you're interested in that). Lambs Club, one of Geoffrey Z's, restaurants was ok. Overall, I thought it was overpriced or the quality of the food but the space is cool.

@regberadaisy: we had lunch at the National which was good. I think it's the less fancy of GZ's restaurants. We had a lovely tasting menu at Butter.

If I had all the money in the world, I'd go to Per Se (I've been dying to go there for a couple years now). Since I don't, I've always wanted to go to WD50 and do the tasting menu.

Our favorite place is Taureau - it's a BYOB fondue place. They have a TON of cheese options, meat and chocolate. It makes The Melting Pot seem like crap

Le Cirque is amazing...@regberadaisy: we sat at the chef's table there and it was AWESOME. The kitchen was so clean! (Thank goodness, lol).
Gramercy Tavern is nice, but a little too bustling for me for an anniversary dinner.
Degustation is a really cool experience--only like 16 seats, and they're all around the kitchen, which is open air/open concept. The chef himself serves you each dish, and it's like a 7 course tasting menu I think? Awesome.
Asiate has sick views, and the food is really good.
@Beehive: we've been wanting to try COrton ever since seeing a documentary on the chef!
