Realistically.
I doubt we can afford to be snow birds. But we don't really have a retirement plan yet. I can see us moving to be closer to our grandkids!

I kinda wanna grow old in the house we're building right now.

I would love to retire in Seaside/Watercolor/Grayton Beach, FL...really anywhere along 30A. It's my favorite place to be.

@chopsuey: I don't think I would want the upkeep at 65! Lol!
I can see us selling this home when all the kids have married if they love away. If not we might keep it so the kids have a place to stay when they come visit.

Aw, your "realistically" ruined my excitement when I first read your thread title. LOL I would have said St. Thomas, but realistically probably somewhere close to the beach up in the northeast near where we live (Pennsylvania). Probably one of the Delaware or Maryland beach towns.

We live in MA now but own a lake house in NH. We always talk about retiring there, at least for the summers. I think I'll probably want to go somewhere warmer in the winter if we can afford it.

I don't know. It will depend on where our kid(s) end up. I'd like to be somewhere within driving distance of them or near an airport with a direct flight. Oh and preferably in a place with a low cost of living.

I would *love* to retire somewhere in Mexico.
BUT, realistically, it will be wherever my kids are - boring!

In the house we have that is one of the reasons I was okay purchasing small and one story was a MUST. Plus, the plan is to travel as much as possible when we're retired. Take the kids if they want/we can afford. Or just enjoy being old

I want to retire to St. Simons Island, GA. But I also don't want to keep my family home. Just want to move to the beach and be there. I wish we could get something now, since prices are so low.
@Weagle: that would be awesome also!

I want to retire in Paris. I have no idea where my kids will end up, but at least there are two international airports and lots to do when they come visit! I also don't want to deal with a car and don't want to be bored, so there will be plenty of activities, friends and some family near-ish.

Our plan is to grow old in our future house...and maybe winter someplace warm like Arizona or Florida!
pomelo / 5509 posts
Realistically in Southern VT for spring, summer, and fall and somewhere warmer for winter. DH is convinced we should buy a property in Costa Rica to live in a few months out of the year and rent out for the rest of the time (we met an American couple on our honeymoon who did this.)

Anywhere I can live without a mortgage... probably where ever my house is.
GOLD / cantaloupe / 6581 posts
Probably in Europe. Somewhere with lots to do, an international airport, and a decent cost of living. DH has promised I can move overseas when we retire, and I'm holding him to that!

@IRunForFun: I was watching House Hunters this weekend about a CO couple who moved to Costa Rica and have a rental unit attached that they use as income.

I def do not want to live in a house anymore... An apartment or townhouse with minimal maintenance would work! I doubt we would have enough money but getting a vacation home or time share in FL would be nice!

I'd love to live in a big old house in a sleepy New England town.

Charleston, SC. We went there for a friend's wedding and completely fell in love.

As of now DH and I want to sell whatever house we have when the kids are off and married. Then we'll get a condo in the city so we can go out and eat, drink, see shows by either taking cabs or walking. Who knows if those plans will change when grandkids are in the picture but that's what sounds good to us now. And traveling lots

I would like to split my time between Hawaii and whatever city my kids live in. I hope that they stay local!

We are also going to try to position ourselves to be as close to as many grand kids as we can. We thought our LO was going to be an only for a while because we were having a tough time TTCing and we already talked about even following him to college if he went to college far away and then following him to where else he goes... Not living with him but just being near by just in case he needs us... I know we sound like crazy parents but if he was our only we would totally do that.

@Cherrybee: I have that picture pinned as one of my "dream" places to visit! So pretty.

@Raindrop: my friend's parents moved from Vancouver to Toronto when their youngest son decided to go there for university. They ditched their 2 middle children in Vancouver too.

@MamaMoose: we could be neighbors! DH talks about Hilton Head or Savannah. We'd like to live in a golf course community similar to my parents.
persimmon / 1171 posts
@IRunForFun: if we ever have extra money, I could totally see me convincing DH to do this. When I studied abroad there we had a friend whose uncle retired there and talked about how cheap it is for such an amazing place to live.

St. Thomas. No red tape, but real island living. I've told my husband this is happening and he just needs to accept it now.

@littlek: game on. We would be the life of the party at the old folks community.

Southern California; splitting our time between Orange County and Palm Springs.

Prince Edward Island ... It's the next province over so not too far from home and soooo beautiful

@Cherrybee: omg is that place real? I think I need to pin this on my dream travel list.
