DH and I just had this conversation Saturday! We will live as close to our kids as possible but have a cabin in the flint hills on his family's land that we can go to getaway.

@hellocupcake: That is what this couple said too! That the cost of living is so low, but it's a great place to live! It wouldn't take much for DH to convince me.

Realistically, it would have to be in the EU if we want to keep our pension. Somewhere warm would be awesome! But I'd probably have a hard time letting our house go. It would be nice to celebrate the holidays with grandkids in our house now, but it all depends on how healthy and able we are by then.

I'm not sure. Maybe somewhere I can swim in the ocean everyday, but I hope for that prior to retirement.

@locavore_mama: Yup! Have you read Dracula by Bram Stoker? This town is where it was set. The steps this picture is taken from are the "99 steps" down from The Abbey - the steps Dracula runs up as a beast when he first arrives in Whitby. They are also the steps I ran up in 5" heels after a few too many glassses of wine!

My husband wants a house on a lake or a house in Hawaii near his family. I want to disappear into the Mekong Delta, Vietnam and live my life out on a jungle island (really). We decided to go somewhere in the middle and buy a house in Seattle (where we live) and renovate it into our "dream home" for retirement.

Unrealistically? Someplace in Greece or Italy. However, my family ( sisters, etc ) mean too much to me to move that far away.

Realistically: Somewhere in Texas, or close to family. My family is currently spread out. In laws are in Missouri, my sister is in Tennessee, and my parents in Hawaii.
Unrealistically, I'd choose Hawaii since I grew up there. But being stuck out in the middle of the ocean with high prices of living is really not ideal!

@locavore_mama: Here is a picture of what is at the top of the 99 steps! The Abbey! Sorry, I can't help myself, I love this place!!
