Yeah, I got bullied because of my weight. I told my mom, who told the principal and guidance counselor. They said the girl was one of like ten kids and was probably taking out some of the bullying she got at home on me. My mom said she didn't give a crap how many siblings the girl did or didn't have, that it was unacceptable. So they wound up giving her a stern talking to... I'm not sure if that did the trick or my huge o-line brother telling her if she effed with me again, he'd kill her.

Either way, she shut up really fast!

i was never bullied or beaten up. i certainly wasn't a popular kid though! i read these stories about bullying these days and they make me so sad, and scared for my kids.

Yup, I was bullied during elementary school. Luckily it went away when I went to middle school.

Beat up? Nah. It's was all verbal abuse because I'm Asian.

Oh, did I tell my parents? Nope.

I was bullied verbally, but I don't remember if I specifically told my mom. My bullies were my step siblings, who made fun of me, spread rumors about me (all the way up through high school), and got other classmates talking about me and also bullying me. The same stuff happened at home, but with my step dad. I don't know why they didn't like my sister and I, we were good kids. He mostly did that stuff while my mom was at work. I think my mom thought there was innocent teasing going on (like mild jokey stuff), but didn't realize how bad it was. Nothing ever happened, but my life and relationships with stepfamily got significantly better when I went away for college and saw them less often. Some acquaintances from high school believed made up rumors about me for years, though. Because of this experience, being mean to kids and willing to tease them like that was an instant dealbreaker in any relationship. Luckily my DH is very kind.

@runsyellowlites: oh my goodness! What an awful situation! I'm so sorry you went through that.

Not bullied like you see on the news, but certainly picked on a lot in elementary school. My mom never knew how bad it was until I was grown and she felt so bad! She said she would have pulled me and my sisters from the school if she'd known. But I was a happy kid at home. There were no meanies there.

I was picked on a little in middle school because I didn't understand brands. I lived on a farm in the middle of nowhere; I had no idea what Nike was. But once I got that figured out, it was fine.
But my younger twin brothers have been picked on since elementary school by the same group of boys. They're in high school now and don't participate in any extracurricular activities because they hate being at school and those boys are in everything. I seriously want to beat the bejesus out of those kids.

@mrbee: My parents have tried to deal with it since elementary school. The teachers all know as do the parents, but the kids are just assholes and obviusly know how to work the system since they're involved in everything and have the teachers all wrapped around their fingers.

It was worse in elementary because the kids were physical with them, but I think it's been far less often and strictly verbal at this point. Not that that makes it ok. My brothers have just adapted to stay away from them, at this point. But I feel bad that they've both really resorted to being less social because of it. They're lucky that my younger sister, who just graduated, took care of them, as well as her friends since they started high school. It's been less awful, I guess in the past 2 years.

When we were very young it was more obvious teasing, but as we got older in elementary school it was that subtle thing that girls do. That thing where grownups couldn't really put their finger on what's going on, or no one could openly see that they were being mean, you know? There wasn't much I or my parents could do because most of the teachers adored the girls and fell for their act, so they never would have believed us.

Wasn't ever bullied or beat up. Not sure why.....I definitely wasn't the coolest kid in school. Probably because ppl could sense that I just didn't care what other kids thought?

In hindsight, maybe my self esteem was a little too healthy. There was a girl on the outer ring of my circle of friend in HS who accused me of "acting better than everyone else". I was like....not EVERYONE else, just a lot of you. Hehe. That sounds so much worse in print. In real life I was trying to be funny, but also point out that yeah, I had my sights set on something in life a little bit more exciting than my population 2,000 dusty west Texas town.

I left there when I graduated HS and literally never lived there again, not even during summer break from college. I have no hard feelings towards my little town....it was good to me while I was there.

Yes and it still haunts me today.

@Espion: Snyder! That's near Colorado city, right? Now just think about 2 hours further west, and EVEN smaller, and you have the town where I grew up.

I grew up across from a cotton field with pump jacks and oil wells dotting the very flat horizon.

Very 1930's dust bowlesque out there.
