Convertible seat, that is. I think we need to get a seat for traveling for an upcoming trip. I don't want to lug around our giant Britax or risk getting it messed up.

We actually just lug our Britax seats around, but agree that it's probably not the best idea. I did have to replace the memory foam on one of our seats, which had cracked, most likely from being in cargo on the plane.

I got the Combi Coccoro to take to Korea, and it worked great but it's expensive. I think Cosco Scenera is also a popular option for travel bc it's cheap.

Cosco sceneras are inexpensive, light and remarkably well rated for safety so they are my recommendation. Plus they are super simple to install with a seatbelt which means you dont have to lug the latch straps.

@Cole: Do you find that they're easy to install RF? My ILs have one and refuse to believe me that it can be used RF. we've only talked about it over the phone, though, so I can't show them.

The Scenera is NOT easy to install rear facing. Forward, yes, but rear, it is difficult to get the angle correct without a noodle or towel. I personally use it for the airplane and it is currently forward facing in my mother's car. She takes my son to day care in the mornings.

I don't know about "ease" but I do know they are made to use for erf AND are safe & very economically priced (as have some great patterns). Techs in the car seat group suggest them all the time.
@T-Mom: I thought seats (most seats) had to be or are recommended to be replaced if they were checked or part of cargo since they become listed as having an "unkown" history?... or damaged if clearly damaged?

@looch: Poo! My ILs (really, FIL) already make a big stink about RF, and I know they won't want to keep her RF now that she's past a year... Even though she still doesn't meet the weight limits.

@runsyellowlites: I think it just voids the warranty if they've been checked.

@runsyellowlites: yeah I really don't know! I definitely think it voids the warranty. I just don't know how else to bring a car seat for travel that would be better? We have rented from car rental places before and they were horrible so we just opted to bring our own.

@T-Mom: I know you probably know this, but the best way to travel with a car seat on a plane is to buy a seat and bring said seat (assuming it fits in the seat) on the plane and have the kids sit in this seat while on the plane.
I know it's not always possible, but you've seen how people handle your suitcases, they toss them around!

@looch: oh yeah.. I totally forgot about that. Man, what a pain that would be, although that would be the safest. It's so hard to get on a plane as it is with 2 kids... but you're right I'm sure the seats are not even being handled well. Food for thought.

@T-Mom: I know that not all carseats can be used *on* the plane but that is the recommendation since it keeps the littles safe.
I saw a horrible comment in regards to such about flight attendants referring to lap seat kids as "little missals" b/c that's what they become during turbulence or other flight disturbance. EEK! I haven't even seen any pics (thankfully) of a child injured b/c of turbulence but have seen stuff thrown around & the floors a mess with trays/drinks/etc since anything not secured down can become a projectile. Definitely scary to think about!
From what I read, they aren't necessarily considered "damaged" if checked but should be examined upon landing & not used if any damage is seen & are considered to have an "unknown" history.... I think that depending on what your manual says about wrecked carseats matters too since some car seats are considered okay as long as airbags weren't deployed or other things while others are considered "wrecked" if in ANY kind of accident. And rental seats definitely aren't recommended b/c they could be expired & you don't know how they were cared for.
I've seen some pretty nifty set ups from some techs traveling with their kids in their seats.... they were actually connected to their luggage they were wheeling through the airport & the kids were even sitting in the seats just riding along! I'll have to see if I can find some seats & post a psa for travelers!

@runsyellowlites: I can definitely agree to checking carseats on landing since we have had cracked foam which I'm pretty sure happened in cargo (we ordered a new foam from Britax). I can definitely see the lap children becoming missiles... that is a scary thought. It gets a little stressful when thinking about all this stuff!

One really informative blog post is this one: http://flyingwithchildren.blogspot.com/
TONS of information. I have flown with my son only two times as a lap child, and honestly, it's more stress for me than it is worth. The flights were short (less than 1 hour) but honestly, I prefer to have my son buckled in a seat. So that means we buy him a seat and he sits in his travel car seat. It's also familiar to him, so he knows the routine and what to do.
