For a birthday gift. If any of you want to actually ask your SO that would be cool, too! Trying to decide which to do for DH this year.
(1) Tickets to an NFL game + new jersey to wear to the game (the game would be the day before his birthday).
or
(2) New iPad (he already has one but it's the really old one and is so slow/doesn't work with a lot of the newer apps/doesn't even have a camera).

I think it depends on how important the game is and how much he does(would) use the iPad. My husband also has an old iPad and would like a newer one but I don't think it is that important to him because he has an iphone6 he's been using more. And he is big into football but we aren't near his team. So if it was a random team he likes but doesn't love, and it wasn't a super important game, I think he would prefer the iPad. If it was his team or if it was a really important game for the other team he'd rather go to the game.
Also it would matter how often he goes to NFL games. If he already goes a few times/year then it wouldn't be that special. If he rarely goes I think it would be the better gift.

I think it totally depends on interests! DH is a super tech guy and loves Apple and doesn't care about football. My kinda geek

How much does he use his iPad/how much of a football fan is he?
my dh also only has an old slow ipad, but he really doesn't use it that much (maybe because it's old and slow, but he is usually on his phone if necessary). I would go for the tickets because not only is my DH a huge fball fan, it would be an experience to do together.

I'm all for paying for memories over things! So I voted nfl game. That's something he could talk about for awhile/remember forever. Even better if you go with him!
That being said, I got an iPad mini for my bday and cried I was so happy/surprised. So can't go wrong!

@Mae: Good questions. He uses his iPad daily, so he'd get a lot of use out of it. He's never been to an NFL game in this stadium and has wanted to go for a long time so I know he'd love that, too.

I voted NFL tickets mostly just because it's more for just him. My husband and I share our iPAD, and it does need to be replaced, but if I replaced it as a gift for his birthday I would feel like it was really a gift for "us".

I think it depends on how good the tickets are. If the tickets are nosebleed, I'd go with iPad. Decent tickets, decent teams, tickets.

Football, for sure. I've given him two different trips to see his team and he loved them both. He still talks about them! Do the ipad for Christmas.

DH is thinking...he says he's not super obsessed with technology anymore. As long as his iPad still works, he plans on keeping it. He said probably NFL game for the experience, but then again that iPad will last year's. Basically, he's no real help, but he voted NFL game!

My husband has no idea about football, so I wouldn't get him tickets for that. But I think it's a great experience gift.

My DH hands down would want the iPad, except he already has the latest one. Not a huge football fan although he'd probably go to a game, but he would never wear a jersey.

Would he buy himself the iPad anyway? If so (and it's not a question of only being able to budget for the iPad is its a gift), then I say get the tickets/jersey for his birthday, since he might not ordinarily do that for himself, and let him buy the iPad once he really needs it.

I asked DH and he said iPad. Game is really cool too but I think it depends who's playing and I'm assuming it's a pair of tickets so he can bring a buddy (or you!).

I've asked DH if he'd like tickets for his birthday, but he's always said NO!!! He thinks it is too cold and would rather watch at home

@PinkElephant: Just saw your question! I think he would eventually buy himself an iPad but not until his became completely unusable. I'm thinking the tickets would be better because I know he really wants to go to a game but ticket prices are kinda nuts (like $50/ticket for the absolute nosebleed seats). So I'm planning to splurge and get us good seats (which he would never buy for himself!).
@sunny: Haha luckily we don't have to worry about the cold factor here
