Don't get me wrong I love sharing my last name with DH, but it's so common and plain. My maiden name evoked questions and mispronounciation and stories of others who share my unique surname.

I would have to say my maiden name, though my DH would probably be upset about it! lol! My maiden name doesn't sound that ethnically-specific, and is a common first name. So my sister and I have always been used to being called by our last names growing up (like how coaches call their players). It's also pretty uncommon. DH thinks our last name is so uncommon too, but I've already encountered same name/wrong person issues so many times since I've gotten married at the Dr.'s office, hospital, shopping stores, etc.

My maiden name is soooo much better! I had never even heard my married name until I met DH. In fact:

well going from #1 to not on the list with a name that now rivals julia gulia from the wedding singer, i can say i much prefer being #1! i actually kept it in part of my name, so now i'm 'first name middle name DH's surname-#1'

I hyphenate, so have both last names - luckily both are short, one syllable names! I prefer my maiden name, though.

I love them both. I dislike my married name for one reason - it ends with an s. I have the hardest time with names that end with s. Are we the ABCses? The ABCs'? Names that end with s have always annoyed me and then I married into it!! Haha.

My maiden and married names are almost exactly the same - only 2 letters different (out of 8). But the married version is more common so I have to correct it much less. I was actually called by my married name accidentally all the time for almost my whole life.

@mediagirl: I don't love my married name because it starts with an S! My absolute favorite girl name ends in the same sound so ill never be able to use it unless I use it in a double name. My maiden name started with an S too, but it's a different sound, so it would work a little better.

My married name is better by a long shot. In college my then-boyfriend and I were checking out at Blockbuster and the cashier said to him, "Wow, that's the coolest last name!" He turned to me, raised an eyebrow and said, "Play your cards right and that could be yours someday." And it is! We joke about that being the reason I married him. My maiden name was long and complicated and doesn't even appear on the database.

Right before I changed to my married name, I got SUPER attached to my maiden name. Now, I'm okay with my married name, but I still miss my maiden name being my last name even if I moved it to my middle name (didn't have a middle name before).

My maiden name was 26128-- I am not surprised, I don't think I had a strong attachment to my name until I got married, I changed it and my married name is #273. I am glad that I share a name with my dh and that I will share one with my kids but I am sad that there are only 2 people left in my family to carry on the name and neither is moving too swiftly towards carrying it on.

I like my married name better because it's short and isn't as clunky. However, we sort of spell it "wrong" (without the e that everyone else seems to use). Here are my rankings:

I like my maiden name better- it was more common and easier to pronounce and spell. When I went to change my name to DH's, a lot of people jokingly said "Are you sure you want to do that?". I'm glad I took his name though. I wanted to have the same last name as him and our future children.

My maiden name combined with my first and middle is a super popular name all around, but it does sound pretty. My new last name is super long and dutch and no one would ever even attempt a guess at spelling it! I do like it though because DH is SO proud of his heritage, so I'm glad I have the crazy name
