I've always spelled it St. Patty's Day, but hear it's St. Paddy's Day. I even see shirts saying St. Patty's Day, so this is all very new to me. How do you spell it?

The spelling of "Patrick" in Gaelic is "Padraig." That's where the Ds come from, if anyone is curious

Patty is only correct if you're talking about a woman (short for Patricia).

Concur with @MrsSCB on the origin. I have an uncle Patrick, but we only ever call him Paddy. St Paddy's Day is really big where I grew up, and it's spelled Patrick or Paddy, never Patty.

It's Paddy because the name is Padraig.

Pad/Paddy is short for Patrick because the Irish spelling is Padraig. We know a Podraig too, who goes by Pod.
Paddy is also a slang term for Irish person here (which some consider offensive).

Wow... who knew? I'm not Irish but I live in an "Irish neighborhood" (if you want to call it that anymore...) that has a huge celebration.

Using paddy as a slur is also (generally believed to be) the basis here in the US (UK too?) for the use of the term "paddy wagon" as another name for big police vans.
