I would have to say dishwasher for me. Although I'd die without it. But I think I'd die more without my microwave.

Microwave. I prefer reheating in the oven or on the stove top. I loathe washing dishes.

we dont even use our dishwasher, not even once, so i would give it up in a heartbeat.

Dishwasher. 98% of the time I end up hand washing my dishes anyways! And I love the microwave! Sometimes you want to heat something up in a minute or two, not five or ten on the stove top or even longer in the oven!

Dishwasher. We had one in our old place and don't currently and it's been tough... but I prefer not to have one than be without my microwave!

@Mrsbells: I never owned a dishwasher before we moved into our house. And I never understood why people even used it (just handwash!). But man..with 2 kids now..I can see why people love their dishwashers. But I could live without it. I don't think I could live without my microwave. Heat on a stove? I'm too lazy...

I rather give up the dishwasher. We grew up without one, so I'm used to washing dishes by hand.

I barely use the microwave, but no way would I want a life without the dishwasher.

We don't have either! I'd love a dishwasher though! This is the first house I've ever lived in that didn't have one and I hate handwashing dishes.

@JessKas: Do you heat up everything on the stove? I'd love to cut down on my microwave use but I don't know how!

I could definitely deal with no microwave. It would take a little getting used to, but it would be totally doable. My mom intentionally threw hers out for health reasons with 9 kids living in the home and she managed, so I suppose I could too.

Microwave!!! We did/do not have both and missed the dw a lot more!!! No plans to get a microwave.

Dishwasher. We hardly use ours anyway, and we are used to washing our dishes by hand. I eat leftovers almost every day for lunch (when I'm working from home) and could NOT survive without a microwave!

We don't use our dishwasher at all, except for a drying rack so that could go. We rarely use the microwave, so if we had to that could go too.
I have a friend that hasn't had a microwave in their home for 8+ years!

dishwasher, the apartment i'm living in now doesn't have one and it's a pain but doable

Microwave. We had a huge power surge a few years ago and it killed ours. We were too lazy to replace it because it hangs over the stove and it just looked like it was going to be a pain to replace. So we lived without it for a good year and it was no big deal. But we finally replaced it right before we had the baby, just because I didn't know if we'd need it for baby stuff.
I hate washing dishes, so I definitely can't live without a dishwasher.

I could definitely give up our microwave, but not out dishwasher! Both are big time savers, but there are definitely alternatives to the microwave that don't require me to stay in the kitchen. That's the key!

@banana: What do you heat up? I eat a lot of leftovers cold, and don't really need to heat anything else up.
bananas / 9899 posts
I'd get rid of my microwave. I mostly use the toaster oven to reheat stuff and I don't cook anything in the microwave.
I could never give up my dishwasher lol.

I hate washing dishes. I'd rather reheat some other way or eat food cold.

We barely ever use our microwave, and I would definitely give that up before our dishwasher. I love our dishwasher!

I voted microwave. I already don't have a dishwasher and would gladly trade my microwave for a dishwasher.

Microwave. If the house hadn't come with it, I wouldn't have missed it at all.
coconut / 8299 posts
@JessKas: Everything! But I use it mainly to heat up leftovers and to defrost frozen foods. I'll defrost the frozen items in the microwave for a little while before either using the stove or oven (to get rid of some of the moisture). I also heat up frozen purees from time to time when I'm in a hurry. I usually use it when I'm rushing for time.

I could totally get rid of my microwave tomorrow and not miss it. DH uses it to reheat coffee and that's about it. Sometimes we nuke leftovers, but I could easily do that on the stove. The dishes, however, are marriage ruiners! lol!

DH and I tossed the microwave a few years ago and got a toaster oven. We are so much happier about it!

I said dishwasher, because ours sucks so I haven't used one in three years - I'm used to not having one now. I don't even use the microwave that much, but it sure does come in handy when I do need it

Dishwasher. Mine sucks. I mostly use it as a drying rack.

I guess I'd choose dishwasher because the microwave is so handy for heating up leftovers. But I would not be happy.
bananas / 9227 posts
Definitely the microwave. We hardly use it, so it's in the laundry room to save space in the kitchen.
pomegranate / 3759 posts
We didnt have a dishwasherfor a long time and I survived. Our microwave died and it took us a few days to replace and I didnt think I would make it!
clementine / 849 posts
The only thing I use my microwave for is defrosting and popcorn - totally unnecessary!
