I haven't read the article yet, I will, but I just wanted to comment really fast. I'm having my students discuss race right now in relation to Ferguson and Apartheid. I teach in a predominantly Asian school, but we have a lot of different races represented and we were talking about how the experiences of the "Majority Minority" are a valuable part of the conversation on race, but it's often hard to talk about when White. It was a really interesting conversation.

Really interesting stuff. As one of the very few minorities on a mostly white teaching staff, I see the negatives of these teachers never having felt like an outsider almost everyday - in the way they talk about minority families, fail to relate to kids who are "different," etc. Like the article says, having the experience of being a white minority won't make you an expert on race, but I think it's an extremely valuable experience that will open your eyes to things minorities see everyday.

I can't really relate in terms of schooling, but I soooort of relate when it comes to hanging out with my DHs family, haha. I'm always the only white person (AND the only American, so double whammy) at those gatherings. Also, the only one of a different religion. Triple whammy!

The town I grew up in was mostly white, but my township was very diverse. My high school was mostly black kids, then white, then hispanic, then asian. I didn't realize it had any impact on my life ... It was just what I knew ... my friends were my friends, and when I was young, I was lucky enough to not have parents/elders to dissuade me from befriending anyone. I didn't realize the influence until I moved to Oregon, a mostly white state. I am often saddened by the idea that my daughter will most-likely not experience how beautiful true diversity can be. There are a lot of racial tensions in Portland. Even now, we live in an area that used to be predominantly black, and is now gentrified. I don't want to act like I understand what being the minority feels like (because I'm still a white person in America), but I am grateful for the perspective my early life gave me.
