Who gets the bigger room?

We have a master bedroom, plus two other bedrooms. The two bedrooms are no where close in size! One is ALMOST twice as big as the other.

Currently Xander is in the smaller room as we made that the nursery and kept the other room as a guest room. But if I want each baby to have their own room, one will get the bigger and one the smaller.

So... should we move Xander out of his room and into the bigger room since he's older, even though that would be disruptive to him? Or just let the new baby have the bigger room so as not to disturb Xander?

I would give Xander the bigger room…
It'll be nice to give him more personal space as he grows too! He'll be able to draw, color, build stuff, etc sooner than the baby.

Congrats!!

I would leave DS in his current room and use the bigger room for your new LO!

ETA: I have 1 boy and 1 girl and I gave the girl the bigger room told DH girls have more "stuff"

I don't think it would be disruptive to move a baby to a new room.

I think Xander should take the bigger room BUT I say that because I would also put the toy box in there and the coloring/homework table and stuff. The new baby won't need things like that for the 1st year or two anyway.

When they're both young I don't think it matters much to them, but I would think Xander will start to accumulate more things than #2 and will need more space?

Speaking as the oldest here, I believe down the road, Xander should have the bigger room

Is it crazy that I'm secretly hoping to have twins to avoid this problem? Then the twins can share the big room, haha.

Down the road you can always use the bigger room and have them share it - that way you can still have a guest room to use as well!

@Adira: You are bat ass crazy!

Are you planning on moving him to a toddler bed and using the crib for #2? If so then I would leave him in his room, so it is one less change for him. If not, then I would love him into the bigger room. That way if you are getting #2 ready for bed at night, Xander will have plenty of room to play in his room.

@Adira: Maybe I'm wrong, but did you say you also had an office upstairs in another post? If so, maybe you can move the office into the biggest room and keep it as a functional guest room and, if the office and Xander's current room are similar in size, just plan accordingly. I could be mistaken though!

We have the same dilemma though our guestroom isn't 2x as big as our LO's nursery.

@Adira: I would leave Xander in the smaller room for now and then you could put a single or double bed in the nursery for rough nights (playing on your other room question earlier today).

I would put the baby in the bigger room for now so you have more space to have a comfy place in there for feeding/rocking, etc.

Then I'd wait until you know the gender and the kids are a bit older to figure things out.

If my kids were the same gender and I was in a three bedroom house, I'd probably have them share the bigger room while they were younger and use the third room as a guest room.

@Mamaof2: I was actually thinking that! But it'll only work if they're the same gender in the long run.

@Smurfette: No, Xander's crib will transition to a toddler bed, so I'm planning on getting baby #2 a new crib. So I guess I could just move his crib into the new/bigger room and hope he handles the change well, haha.

And if I am moving him... when should I do that??? (Obviously I won't be moving him anytime soon - not till second trimester at least)

@Adira: You're hoping for twins?! What have you been smoking, woman?!

I'd give Xander the bigger room...he's going to need more space to play the older he gets whereas the younger one will be ok with a smaller space for awhile.

@Mrs.Panda: I did say that, but it's not TECHNICALLY an office. It's a loft (so it overlooks our living room and has no door). We just use it as our office (both our computers and my craft stuff are in there).

@MaryM: Xander's room (the small room) is plenty big for rocking and stuff. I nurse Xander in his room. It's big enough that it has his crib, a bookcase, a dresser, rocking chair, and nightstand. So I could definitely feed the new baby in there too if I moved Xander out.

@Adira: I would probably do it sooner then later just cause it would give him the time to adjust before the adjustment of a new baby in the house. Maybe wait till the gender scan. If it is a girl, would you want to paint Xander's room again?

@Smurfette: I don't think I'd repaint the room - we painted it a neutral color (it's gray with a teal/turquoise stripe). I SHOULD paint the big room though - it's ugly, haha.

@Adira: I'd give him the bigger room. He's still really young, right? Just turned 1? He's not going to notice. I'd switch him over the summer.

@Adira: If you could do a girl nursery with the wall color in Xander's room now, I would just move him. Plan on a more grown up room for him that will work when he moves into a regular bed.

We gave LMW the bigger room even though Wagon Jr. is in a queen sized bed right now (while she's still in her crib). Both rooms are a decent size but hers looks massively bigger than his since he's got the huge bed. But I did it based on location-- her room is at the back of the house where it's darker and quieter, and it's right next to our room. His room is the only bedroom that faces the front of the house and has 3 windows that all let in a ton of light during the morning.

Currently M is in the smallest room. New baby will be in her permanent room which is the second largest. M will eventually move into the biggest room when she's older.

I think the oldest gets the biggest room when they care enough!

If I move Xander into the bigger room, it's about TWICE as large as his old room. I can easily fit all his furniture in there with room to spare! What else should I put in there (a.k.a. what fun stuff should I buy to fill the room)??

We kept our oldest in the same smaller room. We figured adding a new baby would be enough disruption. We're planning on finishing our basement in the future though, so when that's completed the oldest will get dibs on a bigger room down there if they want to move.

@Adira: I would get a little table in there. You could get him a train table for Christmas and that would take up a big section. Bean bags for reading.

If we're lucky enough to have a second, our plan was to move LO into the bigger room. DH brought up a good point though...the bigger room has a bigger closet. If we have a girl, it would be nice for her to have the bigger closet. We'll see when the time comes!

we were in the same situation and gave olive the bigger room. but when we moved, we gave charlie the bigger room. i don't think it matters that much when they're young, but they might protest when they're older!

@Mrs. Bee: If I thought we might move, I'd probably leave Xander where he is! But this is supposed to be our forever home, so I should probably figure out this room situation sooner rather than later!

Of course, regardless of what I do, they're going to fight. Especially since the small room is... so much smaller... Poor baby #2.
