A bee friend posted on the boards that her LO was the best thing that ever happened to her! I feel the same way about my LOs... but then I immediately felt bad thinking that, because what about my SO? She's definitely right up there with my LOs... and if it weren't for her, we wouldn't have our two wonderful LOs anyway!
But enough with the safe answers, let's get real here. Who is the best thing that ever happened to you: your LO or your SO? You have to choose one!

I guess this could be different for everyone but for me it's my SO! We did not get married to have kids, we just wanted to be together forever. Like you said the LOs would not be here if it weren't for us finding each other and falling in love!

eta: honestly, I don't really think of either LO or SO as the best thing or my wedding day or LO's births as best moments. The real best thing that ever happened to me was going away to college and asserting my independence early on.

I don't really view my son as having "happened to me." He was greatly planned for and was (cheesy enough) a product of my marriage's love and desire to procreate. I didn't just meet DS by happenstance (and I have the scar to prove that!) like I did my husband. I don't necessarily believe I met DH by fate, but I do know that I wasn't really looking to get married before him and my life took a big change for the better when I met him.
So my answer was pretty easy, especially since I took issue with the semantics. I love my son and he has completed me in ways I could never imagine, but my husband is the best thing that ever happened to me. Most of the great things in my life can be attributed to our love.
Off to say some sarcastic things on the boards to even out that sappiness.

My reasoning is thinking of it this way - if DH and I got divorced it would be sad but I would get over it
If one of my kids was estranged from me I think it would break my heart forever!

@Mamaof2: totally agree with you and that's how I thought of it too. If DH died, I mean I would be crushed but I could move on with my life in time. If LO died....man, I can't say the same.

1) myself
2) my marriage
3) my son
4) my close family and friends
5) my job

I love my kids and my husband equally, but my kids are the best things that ever happened to me. DD1 was a complete surprise after DH and I had been together for 5 years and having her completely changed my life. I never really thought I wanted to be a full time mom and I was kinda ambivalent about having kids at all. I was the breadwinner in our relationship and planned to send her to daycare so I could continue to work full time. Once she was born I looked at her and realized that being a mom was my life's purpose so now I'm a SAHM.

DD is a product of my relationship with DH. Without him there's no her. I have always said the best part of my life is being married to him.
Neither of them happened to me. We waited to have children intentionally. She was born after we had been married 8.5 years.

I voted DH. I adore my kids of course, but really I would adore them regardless of who they were (i.e. if I had conceived a month later, they would not be the kids I know now, but I'm sure I would love those hypothetical kids as much as I love my actual kids). But DH, I love him/chose him *specifically* and I can't imagine having what we have together with anyone else.

My feelings towards both are totally different. Different classes of "the best". My relationship with DH has made me a better communicator, and I feel confident in myself and our life choices. Parenting LO has taught me how deeply I can love (or how much deeper).

Other than my relationship with God, DH is the best thing that happened to me. I wouldn't have my kids without him anyway. He was an incredible husband before kids, he's a phenomenal husband and father after kids, he works his ass off for us, he's my best friend and I never get tired of spending time with him. I adore my children, but I've always prioritized my marriage when it comes to household decisions.

DH for sure. Without him, there would be no kiddos. We had so much trouble having our kiddos, and we went through it all together. It very much brought us closer together, and our relationship is better because we were there for each other.

DH. I was going through some depression when I met him and he really saved me. He makes me a better person and ever since having a baby, I am even more obsessed with him. I adore DS, but he is only 15 weeks and I am still kinda getting to know him, if that makes sense. I can imagine having a happy life if we never had a kid but I can't imagine my life if I had never met DH.

DH. It's a very close tie, really, but he might squeak it through. I think because DH really broke a lot of walls I had put up. He really made me a happier person. I love LO to pieces, but I don't think the impact on my life was as huge.

DH. I adore my son of course, but I have a level of respect for my husband that will not be rivaled. His honesty, integrity and wisdom continue to astound me. I am so lucky to have him to ground me and love me.

I have to go with my children for the same reasons as @Mamaof2 & @yoursilverlining. If my relationship ended for whatever reason with DH I would be heartbroken but would eventually recover, if my relationship ended for whatever reason with my children I would be a wreck and emotionally unstable.

I love my LO, but DH, we've been together since high school, so he's always been my life. Honestly I don't know that I could survive if something happened to him. I also want to say I didn't think I've ever seen a poll so evenly divided on here.

I love DH of course and I see us being together forever. We're so happy together and function together so well.
But it's different with LO. Like @yoursilverlining: @Mamaof2: as heartbroken as I would be to be widowed or divorced... I can't even fathom the thought of losing my child.

@hummusgirl: this is so true too! How I love them is completely different types of love. I remember asking my mom when I was a kid if she loved my dad or her kids more and said it's so different, I couldn't say. I remember being so frustrated with her answer! But now I totally get it.

DH is definitely the best thing that happened to me. He helped show me what a healthy loving relationship looked like and to really trust others. I don't think I would be a good mother if it weren't for him, and not just because I wouldn't have the awesome kiddos he helped make

DH. I picked him. He's made me who I am.
As odd as this might sound, I have always considered DD "temporary". As in, she'll (hopefully) always be part of my life, but she won't always be the centre of my life. My relationship with her will always be changing as she grows and becomes more independent and eventually goes off on her own. And I'll still have DH. Sure, our relationship always changes but we're together, forever. For each other.
For the record, I love her and planned for her and wanted her.

This was really hard for me to answer because my SO is a big reason I felt I would ever be able to parent. Without him I doubt I'd have reached a place where I'd think myself capable of being a mother.
I actually probably would have dedicated myself to being a caregiver for my parents. And I'd probably be working on my PhD online, just as a way to have something to do. What a different life.

SO. Back when we were just work acquaintances, he unintenionally (and unknowingly) gave me the courage to leave my physically and emotionally abusive alcoholic husband.
I love DD with all my heart, and she is the best thing that ever happened to SO. But I may owe my life to SO.

@JennyD: I agree with this. SO is the only family member you can choose based on compatibility. It's the relationship that takes the least work because we get along so well and are so tuned into eachother. I've always said being with his is effortless- like breathing. And we will always live together. Hopefully for 60-70 years.
DD is so awesome but being a parent to a toddler is work- awesome work but still physically and otherwise demanding. It's what I signed up for.

@JennyD: Ding ding ding. I've never thought of my children as "mine." I get that they are literally my flesh and blood and I absolutely adore them and would easily give my life for them, but I feel like my role is of someone vested with this responsibility to help them become who God created them to be. I'm supposed to protect them and care for them and teach the skills to be competent human beings, but they don't belong to me. They will go off and live the life that's meant for them. But DH IS "mine" and we belong to each other. We chose each other and are committed to one another and we'll be together until we die.
