yes people can be rude about the name if you tell them the name prior to the baby arriving. They will try to talk you out of it, or give other suggestions. but if you wait and tell them when the baby is already born they just accept it.

We only told our parents, and didnt tell anyone till she was born

We were TG, so we couldn't have shared a name anyway, but if we weren't we wouldn't have anyway. We went in with short names for each gender because we wanted to meet him/her before we decided on a name...but mostly because we were indecisive, lol. I think if we had absolutely LOVED a name and we knew the gender and there was no chance we'd change our minds about it we probably would have shared.

We plan on keeping names a secret also! I just think it's fun. Plus I don't want any backlash on the name we will choose. Plus we aren't finding out the gender.

We're still kicking a few around, but pretty much settled on one. We're keeping it secret for a few reasons. First, I don't want to hear anyone's opinion other than, "That's great." Second, and this is really just personal preference, I really don't want anyone addressing my belly by name. I have a lot of friends who have done this, and for some reason, it just doesn't sit well with me. I'm not worried about someone "stealing" it. People can name their kids whatever they want - it won't change what I name mine.

@sslm: We are the same-- it just feels so personal. I didn't actually think I would be that way, but once I got pregnant and we started talking about names, we decided to keep it quiet. Now when I talk to other people having babies, if I ask about names I'll say something like, are you sharing the names you like? So far it's been maybe half and half.

We don't have much reasoning, but it does feel private, plus we are still in the early stages so our thoughts now may very well not end up being the names anyway, and I don't want to hear from people who don't like them. We'll see if it changes once we settle on our top choices.

We are also team green, though, so it's not like we could get anything personalized until after anyway.

I told everyone both of our lo's names before they were born and I got nothing but positive responses so I also don't understand it but then again if I got negative responses I probably wouldn't tell anyone else.

Nobody has said anything negative to me and I have no problem telling people what we are naming her when they ask.

@Running Elley: My DH was much more adamant about not telling people too. I was on the fence, but feel good with it now.

Nobody ever said anything negative to us and it's common in DH's family to tell everyone the name when you find out the gender. We are, however, secretive about our future name because we don't want anyone to take them.

@allison: Seriously! I have lived in different areas, but the South is obsessed with monogrammed things. I just don't get it.

@Smurfette: I knowwww. It's ridiculous. And you can't use the stuff for future babies/kids!

@Smurfette: I know. I'm not sure how (or if) we're going to do it. Cousins of mine did this and called the baby "Baby LastName" to friends and family in emails and on FB until the naming ceremony.

I'm sure that, just like in wedding planning, it all depends on the couple and their families. Our families are both very supportive and laid back. I can't imagine them saying anything rude about names or being pushy--our wedding planning was a pretty drama-free breeze (and we had two different religious ceremonies and two receptions).

But also, I think they all know DH and I well to know we aren't going to name our baby "Apple" or "Sugarplum" or anything.

We didn't tell anyone... because we didn't have either name until just before we left the hospital!

We kept it a secret because we wanted something to be a surprise since everyone knew we were having a boy. I was also worried we would change it last minute. Which we kind of did. We had one name set then changed our minds when I was about 30 weeks along.

we weren't sold until probably a couple weeks ago. even now, DH and i don't call her by the name we chose very often. now that we're in the final countdown, i am still looking around, but unless she comes out not looking like the name we chose, we know it. no one else knows because we didn't want any opinions either way. it doesn't matter how supportive people are, faces and opinions are always shared! now we're excited to have a secret and we can't wait to announce when she arrives!

@.twist.: try to spread the word now that we prefer gender-neutral baby things so we can re-use for future children. Hopefully, that will also deter people from putting names/monograms on things. Otherwise, I'll probably just attempt to rip out the monogram, if it's something I otherwise like.

We were open about, it wasn't so much as a "claiming of the name" as a we are going to use it no matter what. I never posted it on FB or anything, but if someone asked I would share it. I had a couple people ask "so how did you come up with her name" or "i've never heard it used for a girl" but I just let it slide!

We didn't want other people's opinions on the name and didn't want people trying to change our minds. We also wanted to "officially" announce her arrival by announcing her name for the first time.

We aren't sharing potential names, but that has a lot to do with being TG, although we wouldn't share even if we knew the sex. I guess mostly because we don't want people's opinions (I've had too many friends change the names they loved because of opinions from parents/siblings or close friends), superstition and element of surprise! Plus we haven't decided 100% on names for either sex, figure we need to meet LO first.

I don't think there is right or wrong in sharing or not, all depends on what each couple is comfortable with!
