i know there are a lot of CD mamas on here, and there are lots of different reasons people choose cloth. i'm just curious what your motivations are & if you feel like you achieved your goal by using them (be it saving $$ or creating less trash, etc)

Change this to 'choose multiple' please Then I'll vote! But basically... save the earth, save money, keep chemicals off the tush, prevent blowouts.

Less overall cost, less chemicals, more environmentally friendly (i.e. I didn't want to contribute thousands of diapers to landfills).

I did a poll about this a long time ago-- some interesting responses in addition to whatever you get on here: http://boards.hellobee.com/topic/why-do-you-cloth-diaper#post-184133
I always had thought it was only environmental (ie, only crazy hippies considered cloth diapering!). It was so interesting to see all the reasons I had never considered. LO isn't here yet, but we won't be CDing. DH would definitely not be into it and I just don't think it's for us.

@JoJoGirl: I almost made it multiple choice when I made it, but decided not to because it would be easy to just click all of them. I wanted people to commit to their primary reason but I'm more than happy to read everyone's reasons down here!

Primarily the cost. My secondary reasons are tradition (my mom cloth diapered me and my sister) and better for baby.

Cost, cuteness, & no blowouts were at the top of my list to decide to CD. Since starting, less chemicals on my baby & in the trash fills has been added to the list along with convenience, since I never have to worry about running to the store late at night for diapers!

@Foodnerd81: I like it! Interesting indeed!
FWIW, we plan to try CDing when the time comes & hope it works for us. I don't think it will save us any $$ (I am the ultimate frugalista so I'm sure I could buy sposies for less $$), but I'd like to limit exposure to toxins whenever possible & would rather not add to the landfills

Most of those reasons! I feel like there are so many benefits to CD-ing that its worth the extra bit of laundry I'll be doing.

Our main reason was the chemicals and toxins in sposies freaks me out (it pains me we have been using them the last few months but after DS's nutritional yeast reaction cloth was causing ulcers on his meatus). Our other main motivations were cost savings and better for the environment....
When we cloth diaper we have only 1 small bag of trash each week! I love never having to buy a diaper or a wipes. It's so nice to not worry about running out of diapers. My mom used cloth on me and long before DS was born (~6 weeks pregnant) we decided we would be using cloth full time...DS actually prefers the cloth on his bum as he has sensitive skin. The difference was very obvious at first CD...Now that we have been using sposies the last few month DH actually has come to appreciate CDing and said he can't wait until we go back with the next baby!

@mrs. bird: Thanks! I'm too chicken to try CDs again at this point so we are just going to use them until he PLs...hopefully soon!

Cheapness! I spent about 200 dollars on cloth diapers, and I'm done forever. I spend 10-20 dollars a month on disposables for nighttime/random accidents out in public, and that expense irritates me. I couldn't imagine spending it to diaper a child full time. My stash will diaper any future children I have, and then I'll pass it down to some other family, so it'll be useful for a long time. I love that.

@sarac: wow! $200 is awesome! how many diapers do you have & what kind are they? did you buy them used or new? i love a good frugal mama story =)

It's a combo of keeping diapers out of landfills and saving money. It's funny, I had a stash for quite a while, but I was too scared to use them until she was 9 months old! I should have started earlier because we love, love, love them.

Not having to run out for diapers and it's all I really knew growing up. My Mom CD'd my sis and I babysat kids that were CD'd

To save money and because they are better for the environment and sensitive skin. Bonus is that they are super cute!

@meredithNYC: i love hearing when people switch from 'sposies to cloth & love them! makes me feel like if you know both sides and still like them, then they must be worth it =)

@mrs. bird: I have a combination of gdiapers and thirsties covers, mostly gdiapers. Thirsties I just have in size 2 - and those were all purchased new. Gdiapers I have in sizes from premie to XL. Those were purchased about 50/50 new and used. I stuff them with prefolds or flats - I have a ton of each. Most of that was just lucky hits at the resale shops - I don't think I bought any new inserts, but covers in good shape are hard to find used, so I mostly bought those. But cloth diaper stuff on amazon isn't very expensive - even thirsties snappies are just $13 each.
I got some of this stuff handme down - half of my prefolds, lots of my size small gdiaper stuff. I might have spent $100 more had I not gotten that stuff, although a lot of it is just extra. I have enough stuff in size small for twins.

We did it to save money and I know that we've saved a ton so far!!!

First and foremost to save money. Then because I didn't want to add to landfills. We've had exactly 2 blowouts in cloth, one of which was when he was 3 weeks old and they weren't fitting quite snugly on his thighs yet. And they're super cute.

Our primary reason is for the environment, but many of the other reasons are also secondary motivation for us.

My mom always said she would never put a paper diaper on my tushy. After hearing it over and over I felt like I should do the same for my LO.... even though I know sposies are much better now a days. It's just one of those things I have engraved in my head though.
pomegranate / 3890 posts
Save money. Its a plus that it's good for the environment and better then disposables ( I don't think aposies are bad though esp these days, but I do feel better when my baby is in cloth!) Plus they are super cute and help his pants stay up BC my kid is super skinny in the waist.

My primary reason is environmental, I felt kind of icky at the thought of putting so many diapers in a landfill. Secondarily I like that it's less chemical-y. For both the baby and the dog, as I've heard that the gel beads are poisonous to dogs and ours gets into exactly what you don't want her to. I don't think I'm gonna make out much better on the cost front, lol. Even with buying some things second hand I have a feeling when I finish my stash it's going to be pretty pricey.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
Initial reason was to keep chemicals off my baby - their precious skin is so sensitive!
Second reason was to save money - though we didn't save a lot because his skin was so sensitive none of the diapers we had worked and by the time we found one we didn't hate, we had spent so much on replacing them and trying new ones, it was pointless to buy another stash. AND at that point we were moving to an apt without washer/dryer so we would have had the ADDED cost of laundry (and I don't think it was allowed here - AND the washer didn't have rinse-only cycles)... SOOO finally we had to quit we sold the stash and got a lot of the money back so that's good.
Environmental was third reason - though I saw it more as a perk
Now we use honest diapers which aren't exactly cheap but they are free of chemicals, they're cute and good for the environment.

In this order: save money, keep chemicals off baby's tush, prevent blowouts, convenience (not having to run out to buy diapers, and keeping diapers out of landfills.
It's working out, though we only use them about 50% of the time right now as daycare doesn't allow them.
pomelo / 5791 posts
Our main reason was to keep chemicals off the baby as much as possible. Also, preventing blowouts and making less waste.
I convinced DH it was cheaper in the long run, but conveniently left out the fact that I am now addicted to buying them....so it's probably not saving us much! lol

Mostly we committed to save money. It being better for our sons skin and reducing negative environmental effects round out our top 3.
