I'll admit I'm pretty excited because there weren't a lot of options for dolls that looked like me when I was younger. If there was a Black doll it was one skin color. And definitely none with my hair type!
This one is my fave! I kind of want it for myself.

@mrsjazz: I was happy to see this today. I called Mattel when I was about 12 because I was so mad about the lack of diversity. I have no idea what they said to me, but I just remember being upset and my mom letting me call! No plans to buy any Barbies myself right now since LO is 20 months and only into cars and trucks. But I'm glad they are finally addressing this issue!

I'm sort of confused as to why they had to use labels referring to size? Curvy? Tall? Petite?
Why not just 2016 Barbie dolls?

@jhd: My daughter is not that into dolls yet, though she did see the photo I posted and said she liked those girls. There are other dolls out there now besides Barbie, took them long enough to catch up!
@mrsjyw: I think they did this on purpose from a marketing perspective. It's making a statement--one that won't necessarily appeal to everyone, but I know seeing the word "curvy" and "Barbie" next to each other made me interested and wanted to see what the fuss was all about. Once I saw, I was more interested in the addition of skin colors and hair textures.

@mrsjyw: I think it's so you know which accessories to buy for that doll. Since they are different shapes, the clothes won't all fit all dolls.

Can't say for sure (and definitely not right away since LO is 7mo), but I'm MUCH more likely now. I'm blonde haired and blue eyed, so I never gave it much thought growing up, but now that I'm older I'm really glad they're including some diversity.

I really want to like the new Barbies, but the clothes are giving me major pause. I'll stick to my original. The blonde's outfit on the raven's body would be perfect for me. This curvy one on the bottom is my favorite of the new body types.

I never liked Barbie as a kid. Right now I have one son, so I doubt Barbie will come up. If I ever have a daughter, I will definitely not encourage Barbie.

Yes! C has multiple full-size dolls already and we do have an AA and an Asian one, as well as white ones. But my mom bought her a big doll house for Christmas and I'd love for her to have Barbies that aren't just the normal skinny blonde. I'll have to buy a chubby one with big curly hair so she can have one that looks like her mom. Haha

I had one Barbie and Jem as a kid. I wasn't super into them but we'll see how LO is. She would rather have a book about Barbie than the doll right now. But I bet if I buy the one above for myself she will want to play with it.

I loved barbies as a kid. I had like 30, but more than half were heavily used barbies from the 70's. My mom's friend was going to throw them away so she gave them to me. They were beat up but I loved them.
If I have a daughter I will buy her new ones if she wants because I always loved getting new barbies. I also love that they come in so many varieties now!

Love these! I was a huge Barbie fan when I was little so avoiding Barbie was never an option, despite all the obvious reasons to do so. My LO is blonde haired, blue eyed, tall and slight (though, fortunately, she doesnt need to carry her kidneys in a bag) but I intend to buy a wide range because, y'know, people don't all look the same.

@mrsjazz: I don't know yet, I would love to see them in person and then I need to get a look at the prices of the clothes! I am thinking of getting all the same body type, but different skin/hair color combos.

I will be more likely to consider buying them for my DD when she gets older. This was a welcome surprise in my eyes. I didn't really love Barbies when I was a kid and was going to avoid purchasing them at all costs...now I don't have to, necessarily!

I like the one in the OP that is on the far left. Cool dress, tan and long brown hair.
On a slightly hopeful note, my LO and her friend fought over the white doll when they were two years old. Neither of them are full Caucasian so thought it was quite interesting. Would like to see the preschools and families following suit with diverse dolls as well.

@mediagirl: ha. I didn't even notice the Kardashian looking one. There is one that reminds me of Jennifer Lawrence--the blonde with short hair, frilled skirt, and leather vest.

I'm glad they are finally diversifying, but as an adult I've cringed at most of the dolls available, Barbie, Monster High, etc, etc. I won't initiate any doll purchases for DD, & if she expresses interest, I'd like to try & foster her appreciation for variety & diversity.

I'm so out of it. Which one is Kardashian? We won't be buying any because LO got every single Disney princess Barbie when she was two from DH, unbeknownst to me. ( I was not into Barbies, Disney or princesses at that time.)

Yes, I plan on getting a couple for LO! I love that they have "Curvy" Barbies and I want to support that. I don't love the clothes for the Curvy doll with the dark complexion so I think I will opt for the Curvy doll that looks the most like me and has cute clothes, and then this other one that looks more like LO:

So I may be the only one here who has a boy who plays with barbies? Ha.
I still have a number of barbies from when I was a kid. He found them in my closet about six months ago and plays with them occasionally 
I think it's fun and cute. I used to make my little brother play barbies with me.
I like these new barbies a lot!

While I think it's great they are finally diversifying, the logistics of that diversity are a disincentive for me. One of the big upsides of Barbie to me was the interchangeability - she could be fancy and casual, a surgeon and a beauty queen, a teacher and an astronaut. Now I have to buy those options in different sizes or only this particular size/shape/color of woman can be that particular identity. I also have zero desire to try and distinguish between multiple sizes of Barbie shoes. Who thought that was a good idea I don't know... I'm on board in the abstract of new Barbie but not so much the reality.

I have a box of my sisters barbies in the basement. She had 2 boys and did not want them. I'm sure I'll break them out but I doubt I'll buy new. I never remember playing with them.

I had more Jem dolls athan Barbies, lol.
I would definitely buy dd one, but right now she prefers the Disney princess dolls. Elsa, Anna, Ariel in our house!

I really like the idea of changing Barbie to incorporate new shapes but DH and I had a laugh wondering if they would ever change Ken?! His body physique (from what I remember in the 80s) is pretty cut and chiseled (not to even mention his bulge lol) and what would they call his shape to compliment Barbies "petite" curvy" etc.?!
