I'll buy them nice stuff when they're in high school and have pretty much stopped growing.

It depends on the brand/item... I might buy them a few things but I won't stick their wardrobe with $100 jeans on a consistent basis.
I plan to do their shopping at gap, old navy, the children's place, target- just as I do now and usually shopping clearance and sales/using coupons.
I would be willing to treat them to one more expensive piece of clothing for their birthday, if they get good grades etc..

@Mrs. Pen: this. I think there should be a healthy ground between getting this stuff for them and also making kids feel like pricey items should be earned or at least SWIPED AWAY if grades slip up or attitudes get out of hand.

Um when you said designer I thought "Gap" and only on special occasions! $100 jeans? Hell to the no! If they want it so had they can get a job then buy it themselves.
I've never had $100 jeans! No way.

DH and i have talked about this. Our plan is to tell our kids that we'll buy them clothing/shoes but if they want something that's more expensive, we'll only pay $x and they have to save up the rest to buy it.
We really don't want our kids to value designer clothes. My preference is that they care more about quality than quantity.

I think there will be balance, just like I have. I'm not so much about the name as I am about the quality. A pair of shoes that will last an entire season? Yep, I'll spend a little extra. A random tshirt.... nope! lol! I also agree with PP's commeting about outlet, and sale shopping!!

Hell to the no. I'd be happy to let her save her allowance and even to help her find extra ways to earn money to save up. But that's it.

My son starts sixth grade this year, that's when I remember brands being uber important! At my school it was Adidas coats! I'm thankful the charter school ds goes to has uniforms! As high end designer as. I get for him is Gap, Hurley, Quicksilver and the like. DD has higher end clothes but I've bought them used or on super sale! I also thrift shop for dsd's clothes, mind you I only buy quality like new clothes. We pay their Mom quite a bit a month and she splurges on their clothes
I also recall in either eighth grade or my freshman year I did really well with my grades and I'd been coveting a Dooney & Bourke small bag, my Mom took me out and bought it for me! I had that purse until well into my 20's! I knew the value of a dollar and I hope to teach my children that as well.
