My parents were neat freaks so I was never allowed messy paints and sidewalk chalk. I might buy some for LO today!

Yep. I don't let it get too expensive, but I like to let DS have the "in" toys (if he's interested in them) so that he's level with his peers. My parents would get me knock offs of the same stuff, and it just wasn't the same.

I never got an American Girls doll and wanted one soo bad, so if DD wants one and enjoys the books like I did, I will splurge and buy her one!

@LuLu Mom: Oh yeah, I wanted Samantha so bad!

Yes! I asked for a Mr Frosty ice slushy maker every single Xmas and, I assume, because it is a "messy" toy, I never got one

Probably not. My mom wouldn't buy big expensive toys like play kitchens. I don't think they're really necessary. I had very few "special" toys...maybe that's why I liked to draw and read?
I bet dh will get him one of those cars you can ride around in though....

My mom never let me have a Barbie (she had sort of a personal vendetta), and I'd like to carry on the tradition. But my two-year-old SON already has one. It was the McDonalds toy he got when I decided the "boy" toy was too violent (it was a figurine with a gun or some weapon). Anyhow, it seems more subversive when it's a boy instead of a girl I guess. Plus he says it's his mommy, LOL. I will try to get rid of it before my baby girl's old enough to know what it is.

I was pretty much allowed to have any toy. Our playroom was all old crappy furniture and carpet so we could do all sorts of paint and glitter in there and not have to worry.

Well, it wasn't that I wasn't allowed but somehow I never got an Easy Bake Oven and always wanted one! So Lady M will definitely be getting one when she's older. I'm so excited to play with it

I always wanted a trampoline. My parents always refused on the grounds that they were dangerous, which I thought was ridiculous. Now there is no chance I would let my kid get a trampoline!

@mrs. 64: yep then only thing I really wanted and didn't get was a trampoline. I still want one. DHs cousin has three boys. Well the oldest pushed the youngest one off and he got a concussion and broken nose
I got just about whatever toys i wanted. I know DH's parents were strict about certain toys but I don't think we will be.

My parents didn't really buy me any toys, and I just had leftovers from my sisters who all are 9+ years older than me. I'm pretty sure their toys were hand me downs from my parent's friends whose kids were all at least 10+ older than them. I'll admit that I make sure my LO has all the best toys that I never had a chance to play with.

I didn't have a lot of toys because my parents just never would buy me any. Any toys I had were a few gifts my uncles and grandma would buy for me. My mom would literally bring home used copy paper and pens for me to "draw."
K will definitely have a lot of toys I wasn't allowed to have just because DH and his parents are much more toy-shopping-happy than my parents who refused to ever spend a single penny on toys for me.

There weren't things I wasn't allowed to have, so much as things I remember really wanting but never getting (probably because they were too expensive). I always wanted a huge fancy Barbie house, and I will definitely try to get one if I have kids who really want one! I also really wanted one of those Barbie jeeps you could ride in... It'll all just depend on finances and what my kids want. I don't want to spoil them.

My parents gave great gifts, but the one thing they didn't get me was a play house. Now that I'm an adult I understand that it was too expensive.

When I was little I wanted a Princess of Power doll (Sheera from He-Man) and a poodle but wasn't allowed, so I vowed that my little girl would have them. I take it back. My mom actually found a bubble making Princess of Power doll and a tiny poodle you grow in water that she gave us when we found out we were having a girl!

@illumina: I loved my Mr Frost!
I was never allowed any Sylvanian Family stuff because my parents thought my little sisters might choke on them. I thought they were so mean and irrational but yeah, now I've got a baby, I totally get it.

I was raised in a hoarding family, so I reacted by shunning attachment to material things, in general. I'm trying to raise my daughter the same way - in general deemphasizing the importance of material things. When she's old enough to demand this toy or that, we'll figure it out. I don't ever want her to feel like I don't care about what she wants, but I want her to know that toys aren't the most important things in the world. I'll probably give her an allowance that she'll be encouraged to save for what she'd like to buy.

I always wanted an RC car as a kid and never got one. I wanted a power wheels too. I'm sure if LO wants those she'll get them.
