I think we will next year! I think it looks really fun, and would be a cute tradition to start with our girls. Will you/do you do Elf On The Shelf?

Haha, I was JUST reading the Santa vs. no Santa thread. You have to do Santa to do Elf on the Shelf, right?

@swedishfish: yes I beleive so since the Elf comes from the North Pole.

No.
Although my mom managed to create the magic of elves for us as children, without the physical elf doll or accompanying story.

Yep we did it last year and DS had a lot of fun with it. His elf is returning after Thanksgiving.

We have it but I don't know that I'll be creative enough to pull off all the Pinterest worthy things! Mine will probably be a little more boring
My aunt used to put a teeny ladder in her Christmas tree "for the elves" and they'd leave the kids a small gift or ornament in the tree!

Nope, I think it is smart marketing but I'm not a big fan of the concept behind it.

@sorrycharlie: haha I don't think I can get that creative either, maybe I will try harder once the kids are a little older and can appreciate the effort put in

I don't expect that I'll have the energy to keep up with an elf on shelf, but it looks like such a cute idea!

No! I guess I can kind of see how it might be fun, but I think it's kinda creepy

If our kid is anything like we were as kids, the idea of a plastic elf that comes alive every night would scare the bejeebus out of 'em.

We've done it the last 2 years, but ours is quite boring compared to some of the Pinterest ideas.

I think it's cute. We got one for LO. I don't know how hardcore we'll be about it. I think by the point a kid is old enough to get it, they'll have some idea it's just make believe and wouldn't be creeped out. My husband and I are just going to hide it for each other when we think of it until LO is older, haha.

I see the charm but it won't happen here, I don't have the mental capacity to be that creative

Undecided! My sister does it and uses some ideas from pinterest and it's pretty darn cute! But I think my favorite was when they woke up one morning and realized they never moved the elf from the day before....try explaining that to a 5 year old!!

@lawbee11: ditto!
I think it's cute, but Christmas is hectic (and expensive) enough already!

Probably not. It's really cute but I don't have the time for
It.

Too much work I think! I could see it being fun, but I have a feeling DD would find him creepy.

No, I'm not a fan of the spying aspect behind it. We are still figuring out what traditions we are going to start.

I won't. I think it's a cute idea, but I have other things I want to do. Also, I read this blog post before I even knew that Elf on a Shelf was, so I always think of it. http://www.peopleiwanttopunchinthethroat.com/2011/12/over-achieving-elf-on-shelf-mommies.html

No. It's really cute and I love the creativity. But I don't like the idea of having to purchase something for a tradition! Feels too marketed for me.
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22276 posts
@BlueWolverine: our elf will most likely just move from one spot to the next. The tree, a shelf, sitting in a toy. I'm not going overboard with it.
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
Haha, no. I don't like the premise, of having to be "watched" for a certain period of time to get presents.

I won't be doing it this year, but I have thought about it and think it's a cuite idea. My sister told me to avoid it at all costs though. She has found it to be way too stressful so I'm keeping that in mind.

@Bao: YES! I think it's so cute. I'm going to wait until next year, because obviously Sadie will have no idea this year. My nieces and nephews (age 2-9) all LOVE it so much. It's going to be so fun. I don't really understand the cynicism. To me, the more fun Christmas traditions the merrier!
