We do Elf on the Shelf! We're super lowkey about it, though; I don't like the idea of the elf getting into mischief, so we just move it to a different place each night. We also don't play up the whole "the elf is watching you" thing. In our house, our elf is there to remind us about the spirit of Christmas in general. DD loved it last year, though (at 2.5). And she's been asking about "Rosie the Elf" all year!

I think it's cute & I'm looking forward to doing it when LO arrives and is big enough to understand!!

Nah, I don't think I would do it and DH would definitely not go for it. He is already reluctant to tell our future kids that there is a Santa Claus. He was raised to know that his mother worked very hard to provide them the toys they got every year and some years were better than others. I was told that Santa would bring us our toys and, well, we were kind of spoiled. Not at all to say that kids who believe in Santa are all spoiled (my parents sometimes went overboard) or that the Elf on a Shelf is a bad thing, but for our future family we will be skipping this tradition. I'm sure we will let them believe in Santa for a while, but the way kids are now it would be a miracle if they made it through preschool without some kid spilling the beans. Probably mine

I thought it was a little bit creepy but we tried it and the kids love it and so we're definitely doing it this year!! It's a lot of fun!

I love the idea, and I'll probably do it in a year or two when the boys are old enough to get into it. If I had a little more time, I might try to do some fun thing with him, but I know I"m more likely to just be doing good if I get him moved to a new location each night.

@mrbee: Was last year your first year trying it then? I'm wondering what a good age is to start it, I'm thinking next year when A is a little over 2...?

@Bao: We didn't really go all out last year... Charlie had just turned 3, and also we probably didn't do it as much as we could've. This year he'll have just turned 4 though, and I'm sure he'll go bananas over it!!

Don't think so. It's kind of creepy, and I don't have the energy to implement new scenarios every night. haha!
