Will you get Hellobee Gold?

@Boogs: sorry I didn't even see yours until I saw anonysquire a post and it upset me a little cause I didn't want anyone thinking I was posting in gold just cause I could

As a side note: kinda funny we thought the same thing at the same time!

I think $25 is super reasonable, but the secret club feeling of it really turns me off! I wish that classic members couldn't see gold threads at all. I feel like it would be less off putting that way.

I'll still think about upgrading, but I really just see myself not posting or following the threads as much because it annoys me. Maybe I'll miss it too much though. Who knows!

@Boogs: I said before (just above) that I completely support the Gold program and am fine with it since I think the site is valuable and deserves the price. I completely agree with you in regard to the program.

I just think posting an identical thread for the "gold only" crowd is a little... off putting. It makes people feel bad. I totally get it for personal threads that post pictures of kids, personal information, etc. But I just don't want gold to become it's own site and keeps the gold members from posting on regular threads. If we have identical "Gold" and "Classic" threads, gold members are automatically going to lean towards posting in the gold thread, and all the classic members will miss their contributions. Sorry if I came off rude.

@Boogs: How can you be offended by someone using the term annoying and then continue to use it against so many other people?

I havent seen one person against supporting the site or denying that Hellobee is a great resource. I think the complaint lies in the segregation it seems to be causing.

I am sad by the people who want to leave. Mr and Mrs Bee need to make a living too, and they put so much time and hard work into this site, and if you think of how cheap it really is to become a gold member, it is silly to get so upset over it. I know we all have tight budgets (believe me, you have all seen my money related posts), but it is about 50 cents per week. To me, to get awesome advice and have the support of this community is well worth the money. HB is such a tight knit community, I feel like this is tearing us apart and it shouldn't be. I understand feeling left out with the gold posts, but honestly, they are mostly posts sharing photos to protect others privacy, it's not like we are posting about "non gold" members. Please just sleep on it and let things settle down, I know this is all new to everyone, and change can be hard. I love you bees!!

@Boogs: I don't really think it's fair to say people are "crying" about the new feature just because they have concerns or that everyone who doesn't like this new feature doesn't want to support the site monetarily in any way. A number of people, including myself, have said that making the whole site subscription only would be preferable because this multiple tier thing just fosters divisiveness. Voicing issues or concerns helps a site to grow, and I say that as someone who also works in online media. I think most people are genuinely trying to share constructive thoughts.

Hey guys - sounds like there was a misunderstanding, but hopefully that's all cleared up!

Now that it is, I'm hopeful we can keep this thread focused on the matter at hand! I greatly appreciate all the feedback and am following the thread closely!

I am going to let the dust settle for a few days first. It would have been great to pay by month in the beginning instead of paying a full $25 for an entire year without really knowing what the end result will be like. I do appreciate needing a better way to monetize the site and will probably sign up mainly as a thank you to the Bee family for a really great community. I would have also been happy to make a donation if a way had been provided. Regarding the current gold feature, since I am trying to avoid any photos at all, I don't feel that it adds much to my experience to be able to share photos to a smaller audience. I would have much rather had an app or private messaging but understand that there are technical limitations.

@Mrs squirreld: I like your idea about Gold threads only being visible to Gold members--especially if that makes Classic members feel like it is not cliquey.

Yes, I will Hellobee Gold: 1) to support Mr. & Mrs. Bee because this site has been invaluable to me 2) because I like the idea of being able to share more photos. I don't start that many posts and that will most likely continue, but it will be nice to share photos. I will continue to post on the threads that are of interest to me regardless of who posts.

    I hope people don't leave!

I haven't been around for long compared to most on this site, but I've never seen these types of disagreements and divisiveness, even on very controversial topics like selective reduction, etc.

I do agree that the website should be revenue generating, but I think there are lots of ways to do that. The gold post topics could be hidden from non gold, an app could be sold (sounds like a lot would benefit from that), or use amazon affiliate to earn money when bees buy recommended baby products

Yes I will get gold.. Because I'm a blogger that makes my decision very easy!

If I wasn't my answer would still be yes. I would pay for premium access to any site I regularly use. It would come out of our entertainment budget!

I'm eagerly awaiting the day PMing arrives to hellobee!! I know it'll happen someday.. Hehe!

@anonysquire: I said I might do that because I know a lot of us wouldn't feel comfortable paying for ourselves but we could imagine giving it to other members. That was my only point.

I talked about it with DH over dinner and went ahead and got it. I understand and agree with the concerns voiced regarding a wall between users, but I love this site, have gotten tons of great advice, feedback, support, and friendships, and I want to help support the site.

Because of all the valuable advice I've gotten from the Bees, bloggers & regulars on this site, I went gold.

I choosing to see this as an opportunity for some folks to have privacy & other features in the future... Not a cliquey secret club. It's all in what WE THE USERS make of the site. If we choose to keep things inclusive, then they will be! So let's ALL make an effort to be inclusive (like it almost always is here at HelloBee), and not exclusive!

I haven't read all of the replies to this thread. I probably won't get gold membership, but I do think it's a bit odd to see the Gold posts pop up in the regular portions of the message boards. It just seems a little odd and disconcerting to see a post, click on it and then get told you can't see it even though you obviously haven't paid. I think it might be best to either have only Gold members see those posts or have a special log in or section for them.

I support Mr. & Mrs. Bee's decision to run their site as they wish. The fact is that this site is not a public service, but rather a business they are endeavoring to grow. Personally, it won't change my HB experience.

  18. PurplePumps

    pomegranate / 3809 posts

I haven't been around too long, but I like to browse. The problem for me is that so far, this site seems to have a lot more fun silly questions than a great source of knowledge. Maybe this is because I'm not pregnant yet so I glaze over it more since it doesn't apply yet. This is a nice site and smallish community, but not something I would pay for. Even with advertised privacy, I still wouldn't put anything private up, including pictures. Anyone can pay to be gold, it's not exactly private to me.

  19. sarac

    pomelo / 5093 posts

@yellowbird: Yeah, I'm with you. I love HB and would love to show my support with money, but this is just off putting. It feels like a secret club to which I'm not invited. I think that offering more features to people in exchange for money is a good model, but this feels like I'm just not invited to the party.

  20. MamaMoose

    GOLD / squash / 13464 posts

I know change is hard and I think it will take time to get used to the new model. But I don't understand feeling left out. Everyone is more than welcome to purchase a gold membership. If all your friends were going out to a club for a girls night and invited you along, but you chose not to go because you didn't want to pay the club's cover charge, that doesn't mean you are left out... Just that you chose not to participate. And that's your choice to make, but don't e mad because others chose differently.

  21. MrsSCB

    pomelo / 5257 posts

@MamaMoose: you know, the more that I think about it, I think it's mainly because people can see the gold posts even if they're not gold members. I can totally understand why it would be off-putting to see posts that sound interesting but not be able to read them, and I think making them only visible to gold members would go a long way toward alleviating that.

  22. Minnie_Girl

    persimmon / 1453 posts

No. Not enough value for my money.

I have to say, seeing all of the gold threads and being excluded from them is like nails on a chalkboard and totally changes the tone of the site. I've always liked this site, but suddenly I don't want to visit at all.

  23. keiki_mama

    nectarine / 2504 posts

I will definitely get Hellobee Gold! I've learned so much from this site and want to show my support for Mr. & Mrs. Bee. The price is very, very reasonable for a year's subscription.

  24. MamaMoose

    GOLD / squash / 13464 posts

@MrsSCB: I get that but if the gold threads weren't visible new joiners to the site are unlikely to know the feature exists and that would be bad for the Bees in terms of growing their business. : (

  26. rawrasaur

    pear / 1769 posts

Not for now. I wouldn't post anything different in the gold section than non-gold. My nosy side really hates seeing the gold posts on the boards page, though.

I'm not saying they haven't done a great job, but I feel like the site as a whole is still maturing and I sometimes feel like there isn't as much content and features as I would like (especially on weekends).

As for Mr. and Mrs. Bee earning their living, I have never ad blocked and often click on the ads because they are usually sites I visit anyways.

  27. MrsSCB

    pomelo / 5257 posts

@MamaMoose: Well they could always make a permanent post explaining the different levels of membership. I just think if you're going to have different levels of membership then you should make sure that they all feel welcome. If monetization is a priority, though, which I have absolutely no problem with, then the whole site should be subscription only, rather than having members feeling put out or pressured to pay by seeing interesting threads that they can't read. I think that just fosters hard feelings. I understand that there are growing pains whenever changes happen, though, and I'm sure it'll take time for things to settle/for the gold membership to reach its final format

  28. sunny

    coconut / 8430 posts

@MrsSCB: I agree. I wouldn't mind a permanent post at the top of the boards or across the top heading explaining the Gold feature.

On all the other boards I participate in, the private threads are all in a specific section where people cannot even see the thread titles. You could access them the same way you access the various Parenting/TTC/Month, etc. boards here. That way they are all grouped together for the Gold people as well.

  29. SugarplumsMom

    bananas / 9227 posts

Absolutely! I've been waiting for more privacy. I spend so much time on this site, that I totally value being able to share certain posts with people that I know aren't just passerbys. That's not to say that I don't already share so much with all of you, but having that OPTION is exactly what I need.

As for a secret click/club. It's not secret if everyone knows about it. There's no pressure doing it, it doesn't change any of the old topics and posts. I can understand that it may not be for everyone, but for some of us, including myself, it is well worth it!

  30. Emsmems

    persimmon / 1331 posts

I haven't decided yet. I'm leaning towards yes, but I'm going to let it settle a little bit... It's not the $25, it's just to see if it will be worth it for me!

I agree with a few others: I wouldn't hesitate to pay for an app!!

  31. StbHisMrs

    pomegranate / 3329 posts

I don't like seeing all the gold threads either. For those of us who don't have it in their budgets at the time seeing the gold threads feels like it's being rubbed in our faces, IMO.
I think there should be a private board, not gold threads mixed into regular threads.

I'd pay for an app, and I voted I'd donate but not pay an annual fee.

  32. SweetMamaM

    pear / 1743 posts

Yeesh a girl goes to work for the day and everything changes! I said probably not - the NZ$ is less than the US$ so it will cost me even more than $25, a cost I just don't think I can afford right now. It does make me sad to see the threads I can't comment on - I hope it doesn't change this lovely community.

  33. Running Elley

    coconut / 8681 posts

I don't think I'll be getting it. I do appreciate this site and I've been around since the early days but we just don't budget for things like this and our budget is fairly tight since we have to sacrifice a lot for me to be a SAHM (something that is well worth it to me!!!).

I will be sticking around the regular site though and am hoping to still get just as much out of it I just REALLY hope that the non-gold boards remain just as friendly and active as I've always found them to be.

  34. BelugaBean

    pomegranate / 3516 posts

I wasn't sure at first but we do have it in our budget to spend the money. I also rationalized that if we have the money and I support the website, then I should go ahead and do it because it'll help in the long run with keeping the site up and running.

  35. JoJoGirl

    cantaloupe / 6206 posts

Hmm. There are some features I'd probably pay for, but I don't think this is one of them. I'd likely pay a couple of bucks for PM, and would definitely pay for an iPhone app (like I do for all my other apps), but the cost structure of this strikes me as a little funny. The only website I've ever paid for is Angie's List. While I have gotten a lot of great info from HB and enjoy my time here, I'm not sure how this gold thing is going to shake out. Paying for a more 'exclusive' memership is not something that seems worthwhile to me.

  36. hilsy85

    squash / 13764 posts

Did anyone notice that there IS a way to filter out the gold posts? At the top right hand side it says "show classic only". So you don't have to see them if you don't want to. That should solve one of people's main complaints! (sorry if this was already mentioned in this thread ).

I will probably end up getting the gold membership thing...I'll wait a few day to see how things are working, but I'm on here so much that it would be worth it for me

  37. mrsjyw

    GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22646 posts

I'm so excited about this feature! I think it's great way to help out the site that helps us all so much! And I don't think it'll be divisive, but rather an added layer of privacy that some posts may need in certain topics.

I respond to all posts that are relevant to me or if I can provide feedback and it won't be based on gold/nongold threads!

  38. Weagle

    coconut / 8498 posts

@mediagirl: I know :(. I LOVE HB, but I don't think the benefits justify the cost right now. I'm afraid the site is going to take on a whole different vibe... A not good one. If there were actual benefits to Gold I may consider paying, but right now private (but visible...) threads isn't very enticing

  39. Bookish

    GOLD / cantaloupe / 6581 posts

As much as I love this site and completely understand the need for it to be revenue-generating, I don't have the disposable income to justify joining. The main reason I come here is because it is free advice, and I cherish it. I do appreciate the new 'show classic only' feature, because I feel like that will take away some of the 'club' feel that many of us are worried about.
