Will you let your son play football? My husband is strongly against our son playing football.

Nope! I have seen way too many serious injuries in children way too young for that to subject my future son to it. That being said, if football was all he hoped and dreamed for maybe we could find a compromise. But I would hope to redirect him from that at an early age!

@blackbird: my husband recently read a story about a guy who played football in college and had so many concussions he can't keep a job. Very sad. I told DH you can get concussions doing anything...

My husband really really wanted our hypothetical son to play football like he did. I am guessing J is probably not going to have the build for football, so we're hoping he'll like baseball
cantaloupe / 6086 posts
Not if I can help it. DH isn't into football at all so hoping it doesn't come up.
honeydew / 7230 posts
We won't let him play football, although we are big football fans.
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
@BandDmommy: yeah, that's true! And that's a rare instance your husband cited. I'm not going to refuse our kids an athletic interest, I'm just going to make sure he's protected accordingly. And hope he's not a small fry, lol! I certainly prefer he plays another sport, but I'm not going to exert such control
pomelo / 5257 posts
My H and I have agreed no way. And he even played football in high school. All of the recent info about serious brain damage has definitely swayed our decision.
blogger / pineapple / 12381 posts
Too much data coming out about the long term effects on the brain, so our son will not play. Of course his birthdad is like 5'10" and 130, so odds are against it.
pomelo / 5660 posts
@blackbird: I am neutral. I'll let him do what he wants. My guess is he will be race car driver based on his current obsession.
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
@BandDmommy: shocker, lol.
I imagine in the next 10 years, the gear will change drastically and become a lot more protective, too. I expect the game to evolve a bit

No, and the reason is the sports injury rate and the "knowledge" of the instructors. If those things change (and they may) or specific to the location I may let it happen.
ETA: I won't let me girl do cheerleading for the same reason. There is too much pushing kids without proper progressions.
pomegranate / 3890 posts
Nope. Im terrified of brain injuries, based on personal reasons. My kids will understand hopefully
blogger / watermelon / 14218 posts
No. Wagon Sr. played football and is against it for our son.
honeydew / 7295 posts
I'm will your husband! No head injuries please. He can play touch but I won't encourage anything else. If he is passionate about it I may reconsider but it would be hard for me.
grapefruit / 4418 posts
My husband and I say no, but we would entertain a discussion about if he was really interested in trying. Certainly wouldn't be something we would push, though.
grapefruit / 4120 posts
I am really hoping he never wants to, but he's already obsessed. I am very concerned about the research coming out all the time about football injuries. I will highly discourage it at the very least.
pomegranate / 3565 posts
My husband rather they didn't, and he played in high school. We'll see if/when that day comes. People already tell me they look like perfect offensive linemen!
pear / 1739 posts
If either of my kids want to be in football more power to them. I have both a boy and girl and I'd be proud to watch them play or do anything
cantaloupe / 6692 posts
If he wants to, but I doubt he's going to have the build for it. Haha. Personally I don't want him to. Safety reasons and if I'm going to be watching a lot of sports games in the future Id rather it not be football!!! It's my least favorite sport
grapefruit / 4817 posts
My husband played from 3rd grade through high school and his father has played or coached for most of his life, so it's a big part of my husband's identity. Plus this is SEC country and we are crazy about some football. And yet, we're going to try and push DS away from it. If he really shows interest, we'll sign him up, but we're hoping to get him into golf or soccer. The head injuries are terrifying in football, but practically everyone's kids play around here as soon as they get old enough, so we'll see.
pomelo / 5257 posts
@BananaPancakes: that's what I'm afraid of! We recently moved to a place where football is definitely more popular so I'm worried there will be pressure from friends to play. Although given that my husband and I are both small, maybe it won't be an issue? How about some tennis instead? Lol
pomegranate / 3643 posts
No way. Too much evidence about the detrimental effects of concussions. And to be honest, same with soccer, unless they start banning headers for high school and under. I don't see that happening though.
DH is hoping for basketball. I'm happy if they get into hiking or biking or something.
persimmon / 1196 posts
Not a chance. Luckily, youth football isn't big around here, and we don't watch football on TV, so it isn't likely to come up. Hockey and lacrosse, however . . .
grapefruit / 4355 posts
Nope. DH and I love football and we live in the south where it's a huge thing. But we both agree that we will not allow future children to play football.
persimmon / 1096 posts
I won't encourage it, but I won't forbid it either (provided I feel comfortable with the program/coach, but that would be true of any sport). I won't be surprised if both my boys are athletic - both families generally are, and they're big and strong - but I'd be happier if they picked a "country club sport," haha!
pineapple / 12053 posts
I would really prefer another sport due to the injuries. Yes, kids can get injured doing anything but there are so many other awesome sports out there
persimmon / 1420 posts
Yup. If he wants to and has an acceptable GPA, he can spend his extracurricular time as he sees fit.
pineapple / 12234 posts
Yes. DS wants to play already. I watched DH play football throughout high school and he did have a few injuries but he felt like it was worth it because of the love of the game.
eggplant / 11287 posts
of course! If I had a boy.
But we make pretty small children (and to be honest, there's not a lot of athleticism in our genes), so I doubt it would last past middle school.
nectarine / 2031 posts
I really don't want him to. Dh is very, "its up to him if he wants to." We knew a little boy around 6 that has permanent brain damage due to the pop warner football. .freak accident but close enough to turn me against it. I have a feeling he will play roller hockey since that is what dh's family plays but no pressure coming from this mom
grapefruit / 4455 posts
Yes probably, if we have a boy. Lots of my cousins play/played and I know my family would be really disappointed if I said no, and since I don't really have any strong feelings against it, I'd probably leave it up to the kiddo. I do hope that the game and the equipment evolves, though.
pineapple / 12566 posts
Luckily for us, there is no American style football here. Although, there is rugby and my kid is built like a rugby player. I would prefer to avoid both!
pomegranate / 3231 posts
Ugh, I hope this doesn't come up. We are not a sports-oriented family. We spent Super Bowl Sunday at Ikea. If our son loves football then my husband and I will need an attitude adjustment.
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
It depends on the program. I plan to take the wait and see approach.
nectarine / 2521 posts
I really hope not, but only because neither DH and I are football fans. I've been to one game my entire life. If he does want to play we are going to have to take a crash course about football!
