Did you have all of these documents completed before you gave birth?

we did!! we needed to do it anyway, but never did until I found out I was pregnant! I'm 23 weeks now so haven't given birth yet but it feels good to know it is all in place!

@highwire: yes and no . My former boss (and current family friend) is an attorney and did them for us for no charge. If he hadn't done that, I'm not sure if we would've done it on our own or hired an attorney and choked up the money. Probably would have hired an attorney - even though I hate to spend on things like that!

@coacheswife123: I work for an attorney so I'm considering asking him, but I always feel guilty about bugging him about personal legal stuff, even though he is super generous and always very helpful if I bring it up.

Not before birth, but we will before DH gets deployed in the spring.

Do you have enough assets to merit doing a will (assuming you'd have to pay to get a will done)? The only things I have are a house, a car, and a joint bank account (things DH would get anyways even without me having a will), so for me it wouldn't really matter (although I guess it's always good to have one).

@highwire: I know what you mean. I asked our attorney and I was just doing so under the assumption that he wouldn't charge us! Ha! I just asked for his help and he did and at the end we did offer to pay him but of course he wouldn't take it. But, I bet the atty you work for wouldn't mind - I think its pretty standard and quick to put together (or at least ours was - we don't have a TON of stuff to leave other than life insurance, our home, etc) so it probably wouldn't be a lot of leg work for him.
ETA: One of the most important things to us was making sure we stated very clearly who would be the guardians of our child/children and who would handle their trust fund (not huge - but would be some after our life insurance finished paying off our debt) until they were the age we specified .

@lawbee11: I feel that way now, without children-- we could both get at each others' assets if anything happened to one of us. But once we have kids I would want to make sure there are legal documents specifying how the money would be paid out and making sure our kids would be cared for in the way we designate and by the person we designate.
I don't know that we would have it done by birth but I imagine we would do it soon after. -
@Foodnerd81: Totally agree with you. I plan on doing one once I have children. (Hopefully I can just draft my own or get DH to help me--he's an attorney, too.)

We are just now working on our wills, and about to have our second child. The money thing was never important enough to get us to do this, but we knew we needed to make arrangements for the kids if anything were to happen to both of us.

No. And right now we don't have the money to do it.... we're waiting until after the new year. Awful, I know. We did tell the person that we want to take care of our LO if something happens to us and told our parents this too, so at least that's verbally stated.

We keep talking about it, but still haven't taken care of it...and DH is an attorney! I actually just told him again this weekend we really need to get on it. LO is three months old now.
