I'm wondering what types of layers I should look for to get my DS through the Chicago winter. He mostly travels by car and we babywear when we get to out location. I realize he's not supposed to wear puffy coats or buntings in the car seat. He also runs hot so I don't want him to get over heated in the Ergo.
LO will be 5 months next week and he's already wearing 9 month sizes. What essential layering pieces should I have to put over long sleeved onesies and pants?

Is he in a convertible seat yet? When DD1 was a baby in Chicago, I found it easiest to put her in a fleece coat, Zutano hats, booties and mittens and just wrap her in a blanket to carry her out and put the blanket in her lap for the ride. When wearing her for the el, she wore the same accessories but no coat, and I wore my LLBean long down coat zipped over us both as far as it could and then tucked my scarf around/over he rest, if that makes sense.

I have a baby wearing coat. It fits around me and baby. I like it especially because my girls always fall asleep in the carrier and being able to get their coat off while still wearing them and not having to wake them up was invaluable. And I don't get stuck indoors with a down jacket on and a sleeping baby strapped to me.

@rattles: we don't have a convertible yet, but he may have one by the winter. He's so heavy that I hurt my back lifting the bucket into my minivan and so tall that he only has 2-3 inches to grow before he's too tall for it. The fleece jacket sounds like a good plan and I like your scarf idea.
@oliviaoblivia: I had to look up babywearing coats. I'm hoping I can use my maternity coat for this since it's practically brand new. I can't imagine being inside burning up with a baby strapped to me, that would suck.

I use one of those shower cap type tops on the baby seat so I don't have to keep taking off snow gear. With the Ergo I just pop a beanie on the baby in regular clothes, put the Ergo hat up, and put on the winter coat that I wore when I was pregnant and zip it up over the whole carrier. The only time I dress the baby in winter gear is when it's really cold - like 40 below.

Hanna Andersen has a fleece bunting, we have one and I think it's going to be a great weight for baby wearing. It's too bulky for the car seat which is a downside but if you will be outside for a long time it will be great. You would even be able to unzip the body part if you needed to cool him off without him losing warmth around his limbs.

Do you mean for like, being outside for a long time (10+ min)? Or just going in/out of places? I never had my LO outside other than in/out last winter. I dressed her in long sleeves/pants/socks + a hoodie or thin zip-up fleece/sweater + a hat for her car seat then tucked a blanket over her once she was buckled in. Then if it was just cold I'd pull her out and pop her into my ring sling (I wore it under my coat) and just sort of hold my coat around her as we walked in. If it was REALLY COLD I'd pull her out of the car seat and wrap the blanket around her and take the whole bundle into the store then get her in the sling once we were inside.

Any bunting (down or fleece) really needed to be a size too big for me to be able to wear DD2. The extra length allowed her legs to bend with all the layers. We typically did a onesie, fleece lined leggings/jeans, and a sweater, or a sweater onesie under the bunting, and put a hat on her under the bunting hood. We also had a warm cover for the carrier - the 7 AM Enfant Pookie poncho is great!
This was for being out for awhile - we live in a city so walk most places, esp in the winter when it's hard to get the car out.

We also have brutal winters and last year for babywearing (September baby) I clipped a thick, fleece baby blanket to the ergo with two bulldog clips and then wore my coat as usual but unbuttoned. This kept us both really warm and could be taken off in second indoors without disturbing her. I then used the same blanket over the car seat to keep her warm.
