Mine were extracted my first year teaching after I developed an infection in my gums on one side where the tooth was trying to come up and couldn't. The pain was so severe that the extraction was just pure relief!! No problems with recovery, and as soon as I woke up from the anesthesia, I could already tell that my pain from the infection was gone. I kept the ice packs in my face almost 24 hours a day the first 2 days and had no swelling at all.

I had it done on Friday, was back at work in Monday.

I had mine done in college, it was super easy and I had an easy recovery. I remember drinking lots of shakes and eating soup.

Unfortunately, I had kind of a bad experience, albeit, funny. I took the Valium prescribed before my appt and thought eveything was hysterical which was helpful. When they called me back I got lost in a laughing fit. When I woke up, I started crying. I had never gone under before. The Dr said everyone reacts differently. I proceeded to weep for the next few hrs. I have an "allergy" to codeine. Not really allergic, but I vomit. Bc of that, I gave myself Dry Sockets. Thats when the blood clot in the tooth hole is abrubtly removed before it heals and the nerves aren't covered anymore. Thats also why no spitting or sucking is allowed, that causes Dry Sockets. The pain was so unbearable they had me come in once a week for about a month after to have strips of gauze soaked in clove oil packed into the holes. It helped so much. After that... All done and all better.

Advice: make sure you have someone to help take care of you for ab a week after. If pain meds make you sick, ask for something else. sleep as much as you can and try to start using your jaw muscles a cpl days after. The more you move them the more blood flow and faster healing.

@citymouse: I had a similar experience. I was so terrified that I woke up bawling. I guess I didn't know it was over? I had never thought maybe it was the anesthesia. Also I had a lot of vomiting.

I was given Percocet and it depressed me, like, bad. As soon as I could physically go off it, I did!

In short, the drugs were bad news for me, but the actually surgery was fine! Sounds like you really need this so it would be worth whatever!

I had all 4 taken or at once plus another molar that had blown up and couldn't be saved, so 5 teeth in total. I was put under and it was great! I did ice the first day and didn't have much swelling at all. Honestly it was such a relief from the pain of the molar. The meds they gave me didn't really help with the pain but it wasn't too bad. The worst part for me was the gauze you have to keep in and switch out every so often when you first get home. My jaw was so sore from being opened up for so long. The rest of it was easy peasy.

I had all four of mine extracted in high school. One root broke off so that required extra digging around but I was out completely so I didn't know about it till after. I fought the anesthesia because I was scared to wake up mid-procedure so they had a bit of difficulty waking me up afterwards. I was super groggy the whole rest of the day.

I think I had mine out on a Thursday and was back at school on Monday. I was still a little swollen but it went down pretty quickly. Definitely follow all of the instructions regarding foods to avoid and no straws to avoid dry sockets.

I got mine taken out a couple of years ago. I was in so much pain beforehand the surgery was nothing. I didn't even get put out for it, just numbed. After they numbed me the whole thing took less than 5 mins and I was back to work 2 days after.

I had mine taken out as a teenager so my parents were taking care of me and I remember going back to school a few days later. When my husband had his taken out last year, I took care of him and made sure that he didn't need to drive or do anything for a few days after. The toughest part for me was getting my husband into the car from the surgeon's office, and then getting him into the house because he was so out of it. He's much bigger than me, so obviously having him physically lean on me was tough!

You just need to take it really easy for a few days.

I had one taken out not long ago. I was bfing so I only had local anesthesia and it was fine. lots of pressure (I had a curvy root) but the recovery was fine. a few days later and I was back to normal. I had DH take that day off to take care of me, but I was on my own the other days!

I didn't have a good experience. Mine weren't causin me much pain, but I had one that was in danger of growing impacted, so the dentist decided to go ahead and take all 4 out.
Everyone kept telling me what a breeze the recovery was and that it was nothing at all. My husband had all 4 of his out and was back to normal 2 days later. My mom said she was eating pizza the same day.

It took me two whole weeks just to be able to eat somewhat normally again. The pain was awful. I took my pain medication and only 1 time did it work. I couldn't think of eating anything but mashed potatoes the first two weeks. Luckily I was off work for the season so I could rest.

Not trying to scare you but everyone said it was no big deal and I went in expecting that and ended up with an awful experience.

I had them pulled out a few years ago. It wasn't a big deal at all. They are a little harder to do then some other teeth but my dentist made sure I was VERY numb before starting & I had little to no pain afterwards. Good luck! All the scary stories can be intimidating but there are good ones too.

I had all 4 taken out at once and it was really NOT that bad at all. I think I took Vicodin once or twice? And then just tylenol. I was on a pretty liquid diet for a while/ate a lot of ice pops. But I barely had any swelling and had no complications!

I didn't have anaesthesia, just numbing & laughing gas. Never had any pain, swelling, infection etc. pretty routine procedure.

I had mine taken out when I had my TMJ surgery due to locked jaw so my recovery was pretty rough. However, placing a tea bag over the hole to help reduce bleeding was an awesome trick!!

I had mine taken out in my dentist's office...awake. They gave me a Valium preprocedure. It honesty wast that bad. I had much less swelling/bruising because I was awake (so they couldn't be extremely rough while doing it). My mom is the office manager and she had some really scary stories of how some oral surgeons extract them

It's been a while cuz I got them over 10 years ago when I was in hs, but they just gave me laughing gas, and local anesthesia... i felt pressure but no pain while they took all four out... i was def swollen, but recovery wasn't bad either, i ate later that night!! and never filled my Rx!

I did mine before I went to college. So I was about 18 (over 10 years ago). I was young and I don't remember much but I do remember it not being so bad and it was a pretty quick recovery.

My mom bought me lots of KFC mash potatoes to eat.

@bunnylove08: I'm glad it went so well! I hope you continue to feel better. You may be sore tomorrow, but it's better than having a tooth in pain!

Just to add my experience, I had four impacted teeth. Not a huge deal to come out, but I am super sensitive to anesthesia, so that was what made my experience uncomfortable. Oh! And really, listen when they say don't play with the stitches. I loosened one with my tongue, and that flap of skin in the back of my mouth never grew back the same way as the other sides did. So leave them alone!
