If you are a WOHM, and you found out you were pregnant with twins, would you stop working? Daycare for one infant, is sooo expensive in our area ($405 a week). If we were to get pregnant with twins we would have 3 kids in daycare, that would be crazy expensive.

@littlek: as you know I am not a wohm mom, but will be soon. I would have E in pre-school (whether or not I worked) and if I had twins, I'd either not work (most likely) or work part time. Not only is it expensive but, honestly having 3 kids under 3 and working will not be easy. For that reason alone, if I had twins, I would more than likely stay home.

@CupQuakeWalk: DH and I were talking about it last night because as we move into treatments and high dosages, our chances of multiples are increasing. My mom has already said if we get pregnant with twins she would help take care of B while I was pregnant. 2 dogs, 1 toddler and a workaholic DH would be rough.

@littlek: that's us too. My husband isn't home much and when work demands him, there is nothing he can do. Twins for us would mean I'd need to be free and at their service 24/7! Or at least part time. No way could I work full time with 3 under 3 if that were my fate.

I don't think so; I'm the breadwinner so I have to work not just to keep our living standards. DH cannot stop working either (not for $ reason but his vocation is more like a life calling). I think if we have twins, our parents will have to chip in a lot more that what I plan for. Or I'd really have to work w/ my company and see if we can come up with some flex time/WAH situation!

If this were to happen to me (facing triple daycare) I would hire a nanny and enroll my toddler in part time daycare, maybe just mornings a few days a week. And I would probably stay home for at least a few months.

DH would have to quit school & work ft and I'd likely SAH.

Probably. We're doing IVF this cycle and plan to put back two embryos, so it's a real possibility. In our area, daycare for two newborns would be about $3,200/month, so my take home pay after paying for daycare would not be worth the trouble. Maybe if I really loved my job...

I don't know. Financially it wouldn't make sense for me to work because daycare + the cost of gas for me to commute would eat up most of my paycheck. But I would need to be sent to the looney bin if I had to stay home with 3 under 3!

Look into a Nanny.
Around here the cost for a Nanny is cheaper than 3 kids in DCP
Example: If I had twins today it would be $2600 a month for newborn care. PLUS my youngest DD at 960 per month. - that's $3560 - I could get a Nanny for $2500 a month

No, we'd likely hire a nanny. For one, I make slightly more than DH. And two, the long term financial implications of my being out of the workforce are worse than paying for the daycare. Plus, I'm not cut out for being a SAHM :). However, If DH wanted to stop working for a few years, I'd be open to that conversation.

Oh, I will say this much: if I did work with twins, they'd be ff. I'd probably only BF during my mat leave. I just can't imagine 3 under 3 and pumping or taking out the time to sit down and nurse unfortunately.

Nope - my monthly take home pay would still be twice the cost of 3 in daycare (I already have one). We need my paycheck!

I obviously didn't SAH this year, but the cost of daycare is certainly a huge factor in whether I continue working after my current job ends.

We're having twins and I'll be leaving my job when they arrive. I've always wanted to SAH, but finding out it was twins really sealed the deal.
Edited to add that my husband makes about 4x what I make and we have always lived entirely off of his salary. (Mine just went to savings/fun stuff) So it just didn't make sense for me to keep working with our financial situation.

Possibly. We have one already, but the thought of three small kids without any local family help and a DH with a demanding job would perhaps push me to stop working for a bit.

I’d keep working. Even though it would be almost $2800/month in daycare, it makes better financial sense to keep working than to leave the workforce and try to reenter it in a few years. Even if you don’t clear much more than the daycare costs in net pay, you also need to factor in years of loss in benefits, retirement matching contributions, seniority, experience, pay increases, etc. The longterm financial implications are just too important for me to quit working.

@littlek: A college friend of mine still works FT with 4 year old twins, 2 year old and a 7 month old. But she has a nanny for the younger two and the twins are in preschool!

Well my whole check would then go to day care but I am 99% sure I am not cut out to be a SAHM. So we would look into a nanny.

I think I would stay home. Not only from a childcare standpoint, but I don't know if I could deal with the pregnancy. I am pregnant with one now and its SO. HARD. working full time as an attorney while carrying this tiny person that DH feels terrible for me every day. I will still work after the baby is born because we have a goal of paying off our student loans in an accelerated way, but if we had twins, I'd definitely quit my job. If we absolutely needed the money from my job, I think we'd consider something drastic, like getting a huge house and moving my parents in with us and have them take care of our kids full time (which they would gladly do). But I don't see working and putting twins in daycare full-time.

I don't think so. We have a nanny for L, so we'd keep her and pay her a little extra, but not double. L will be in preschool a couple days a week soon. It would be tight, but I think it would make more sense financially if I worked. Plus, I have lots of time off as a teacher and we don't have to pay for childcare during those weeks/months.

I think I would keep working.... but it would really depend on daycare. I think I have a cheaper plan worked out for future LOs, but I am not sure how it would double/triple with twins.

Ummm...with three young kids in this town--not only would I have to stop working, but we would have to move to a cheaper area, too.
With twins, we'd have to move back to Texas or maybe Atlanta--somewhere south (cheaper!) where my husband has connections and can get a job.

I have twins and I work part-time (about 25 hours a week). We have a nanny bc it's cheaper than daycare in NYC but it's stupid bc we pay her more than my annual salary. So basically we would save more money if I SAH but I don't want to and I'm hoping long-term, it will be a good decision to have kept working!

I'd keep working for the same reasons @ShootingStar: and @yoursilverlining: mentioned. We'd definitely hire a nanny rather than do daycare, though. I make only slightly less than DH and while we could make it on one salary, we really need both to live the lifestyle we want.

If I had another one right now (I already have twins, so it would still be three under 3), I wouldn't stop working. We have a nanny, currently, which is currently cheaper than two in daycare, and would certainly be cheaper than three in daycare.

i'm a WAHM running my own business so i would have to streamline and probably take an extended leave. and then get a nanny!

Nope. I'd work at home full-time tho instead of the 2-3 days that Im doing now.
