Okay guys, help! I only direct this at WOHMs because I need some advice about working full time from people who do it!
So a job opportunity has basically fallen into my lap. I had the interview yesterday, and here's what's on the table:
Pros:
- Job in a different industry but very aligned with my skills - I wouldn't be able to switch industries WITHOUT this role, just given the situation (I'm a contractor at this company and a job opened up at the company to work internally). ETA: It's a different company - I currently work full-time for one company that provides services to a different company, and would be working for my "host" company directly.
- Much more flexible schedule than what I have now (8.5 hr day with flex hours and option to work Fridays from home, vs set-in-stone 7:30am-4:30pm with no negotiation right now)
- I haven't gotten an offer yet, but the pay is likely to be at worst the same, at best better than what I make now. MUCH better benefits including Cadillac health insurance (I pay $800/month premium now for my family's insurance), much better PTO policy, much more fun work environment, and tons of benefits on site (of which I AM one right now), including a health center, fitness center, holiday parties, massage, acupuncture, etc for employees.
- Room for growth - this new industry is just... FULL of opportunity for professional growth. The one I'm in now is essentially a dead-end/pigeon-hole (ie I will always only do this). It's an amazing opportunity to do something really cool that I will probably really love. BUT I do love what I do now too and am happy to stay.
CONS:
- Maternity leave. We just lost a pregnancy and are TTC for #2 - I got 16 weeks off with my first; I am almost positive I'd be asked to only take 12 with #2, unless I can negotiate this as part of accepting the job, which is awkward.
- HOURS. Here's the problem. Right now I work 32 hrs/week (4 9-hr days), and they are hard-and-fast not allowing that with this new position. It would be 5 8.5-hr days with flex time, but the work/life balance I have now is perfect. I LOVE having my extra day home with LO and am just absolutely heartbroken at the thought of giving it up, especially when we have #2.
HALP! How do you have kids and work 40+ hrs a week and make it work?
