Hellobee Boards

I don't think that because most of my friends are men means I have a negative perception of women. :\ It just so happens that more men share my interests than women do.

Anyway, to the topic.

I think there is a lot more pressure on women in the workplace than is put on men, so as a result that last part kind of makes sense... women can be competitive in general and when you amp up the stakes that can exaggerate that.

I'm not saying women can't/don't enjoy those things, only that I haven't met many, especially in person.

I am not surprised about this at all. It's sad to say but women can be downright evil to other women in the workplace.

I work with 100% men. The "perk" I enjoy most is that there is no one to compare my "business casual" wardrobe with, so I dress a bit more frumpy and casual than I would if women worked with me.

@Maysprout: Eh, that question feels weird., like you're my psychiatrist or something lol. The relationships I have with women are fine, thanks.

@mrsjazz: I don't have any direct experience working with women, but when I do come across other women in my field (at professional organizations, for example) I find that they are generally really supportive and helpful too.

It totally depends on the individuals....it's not as easy as making a sweeping generalisation. At least not in my experience.

I work at an elementary school so it is pretty much all women. Though there have been instances of gossip and occasional rude behavior of course, but I really doubt it is much more than in most workplaces.

I work with all men. Women are more dramatic and get all butt hurt when criticized, and take things very personally. I have se girlfriends at work but I don't work directly with them, so it's great because I get friendship but not in an awkward way.

@blackbird: gah I have the opposite experience. The men I work with are way more emotional than the women.

Since I work in education, I usually work with 90% women. I do feel like women are more emotional in the workplace, which has its pros and cons. My husband works in a male dominated field and he and his coworkers will argue about things to the point of almost yelling at times--like, pretty brutal with each other. And then they all go to happy hour and everything is forgiven.

You only have to compare internet boards like say Reddit (male dominated, although of course there are women) to Hellobee or Weddingbee or even Gomi (all female dominated) to see that women get their feelings hurt more but can also be a lot more judgemental in general.

Like in the other thread where we are talking about if Hellobee gets us upset. Most of us women have to avoid talking or responding when we feel strongly, whereas men are more likely to have it out but not hold hard feelings. I don't have that trait---if someone really crosses me, I have a hard time seeing them the same way ever again. I do think it's a *typical* female trait, even if of course, not all women follow it.

So how does it translate to the work place for me? It depends.

I've had a male boss that would yell at all the female teachers which would cause a lot of crying (if it were men, they would probably just take it and care less). We all loathed him. I also had a female boss who was awful--she supposedly "did it all" (with a lot of money and family close by) so had 0 sympathy for a woman who had to take a sick day for a sick child. But I've also had a female boss that cared SO MUCH (emotionally) about our school kiddos that she would do anything for them....less compartmentalization between "work" and "self".

I also currently have a very traditional male boss who is kind of chauvinistic in a good way--like, when I was pregnant and there was a snow storm, he came directly to my classroom and told me to leave early and that he personally would cover my class. He said if his wife were pregnant, he would worry about her driving. He also gave me a special parking place by the front door so I didn't have to walk as far, lol. I honestly don't think a female boss would ever do that. SCORE.

In short, I do think there are differences...generally speaking, between men and women in the workplace. Whether the differences are positive and negative are kind of up to the individual.

I work almost completely with men and I quite like that, mostly. I appreciate that they are very straight with me and don't worry about sugar coating things for me. I find my male bosses and coworkers to be quite understanding about me being a wife and mother.

I hate to say it, but I have been a bit tough on the other women working with me. Mainly because I feel I have worked so hard to be where I am now, to be taken seriously as a woman in a man's industry (oil and gas), and I don't want less hard working women ruining it for me.
