What do you think is the worst insult people say about potential (or actual) baby names?
It seems like for a girl, the ultimate negative is always "That sounds like a stripper."
For boys, it seems a little more across the board, but "Do you want him to be a weirdo?" seems like a common comment.

I think a bad one can be as simple as "oh... really...?"
Or, if they see a nickname that you never thought of and say "Oh, I hope they don't get called _____"

I had someone ask if I went to cemetery to pick DS's name.... I was not pleased....

@lilyann: DS's name is a older name and not super common. People were I live have no filter. DH and I wanted our son to have strong name that wasn't common. (DS's name is Nolan)

@MrsRcCar: That's kind of hilarious. I mean, totally rude, but what?? I really like the name Nolan but it would sound awful with our last name (very rhyming).
@.twist.: Yeah, the pause, wrinkled nose, then, "oh, really?" or "oh... that's... interesting..." is a good one, but at least they are holding their tongues, if not holding their opinions.

I frequently get asked why we named her a boy name or "interesting, how did you come up with that?" I just brush it off, I love her name!

@MrsRcCar: Yea, honestly, I can't even think of a time I've ever seen that name in a cemetery whether it be from a movie or my own visits. And I'm freaking weirdo and have spent a lot of my youth in cemeteries. hahaha...

We are DEF not telling anyone the name until it is on the birth certificate and when people ask us if we have a name I am super vague! A lot of people actually seem a little peeved with us for not sharing our thoughts on a name, but I don't care because I know those same people would be vocal if they didn't like it!

We got "oh, is that a family name?" a lot. AKA - why did you give her an old-fashioned name? (LO's name is Eleanor.)

People have just asked how did we choose it. Nothing else but I think it helped since we kept it a secret till she was here. People are less likely to say something when baby is here and named officially.

we told ppl our top two choices for our girls name (Madison, Avery) and my sister said:
" Madison? that is so disgusting. even my co-workers said its a horrible played out name. so disgusting."
*sigh*
it's still on our top 3 regardless (we added one more to the pool).

After I was born and my parents told people my name, some relatives wrote back and said "Middlename is such a nice name." Luckily I'm perfectly happy with my first name as well. 
We're not telling anyone except the grandparents what names we're considering or picked out, and even then we're team green so nobody knows the final name anyway. I'm kind of surprised that people ask so often--isn't is fairly standard not to tell?

MIL wrinkled her nose at our name and said "Well...That's not one of the names I was hoping for. I hope I can get used to it by the time he gets here." We haven't really told anyone else since some people have no filter before the baby arrives!

@MrsRcCar: I can't believe the commentary you got on his name. We have friends with a 4 year old named that. He's the cutest little kid and has parents with some Irish in their genes, hence the name.

Our LO's name is pretty popular. We picked right when he was born, so no one had time to say anything about it. I almost named him after my brother, but he didn't look that name.
We have friends who named their son "Alistair." Both of my DH and I think it's a weirder name, but never said anything to the parents about it.

"You're naming my baby THAT? Well, I hope it's a boy because I like that name better" is what my mother said when we told her the name choices.
First of all, the only acceptable response is "Oh, how pretty/I love it," even if you're lying through your teeth because it's up to the parents. Second, it's not their baby, it's the parent's child and they can name their kid whatever they want.
If we have a girl, her name will be Hyla Sophia, and I really like it. It's pretty and not very common.

@evansjamie: My mom totally was hoping my brother would have a girl, because she didn't like the boy name they picked out (he's a boy, and his name is perfect for him).
@chanzi: Among people I know, I don't think it's that common not to tell, but it seems to be getting more so. The first person I ever knew well who kept it a secret has a not quite 2 year old, but since then I know more and more people. Before I never would have thought twice about asking, but now I'll say something like, you don't have to tell me, but have you thought about names? or something along those lines. I appreciate when people acknowledge that it's normal to not tell now, I don't feel as bad keeping the secret.
