Is it more expensive to crank the whole house higher at night? Or run a space heater (we're looking into the Vornado) and keep the temp down?

We bought a cheapo 50 buck one and it is definitely cheaper...but we also live in California...

We have a space heater in my son's room and let the rest of the house get colder, but his room is over the garage so it gets colder in there anyway.

Yes it is more cost efficient to get a space heater and keep the rest of the house cool.

We have something like this--it's not a "space heater" and doesn't get hot like a traditional space heater, and is really safe: http://www.qvc.com/qvc.product.H353319.html?item=H353319&ref=GAS&tpl=detail&cm_MMC=GOOGLESHOPPINGFEED-_-For%20the%20Home-_-Home%20Environment-_-Duraflame%20Portable%20Electric%20Stove%20Heater&H353319-000-000&cvosrc=pla.google.Duraflame%20Portable%20Electric%20Stove%20Heater&cvo_cid=85296193587&CAWELAID=1919436027&mkwid=s|dc_pcrid_85296193587_pkw__pmt_

@Freckles: Good b/c I need a reason for us to spend money on a space heater, lol!

@snowjewelz: yeah, it blends in nicely and gives off a soft glow if you want it to (we often turn it off). Also we have carpet and i am comfortable setting it on the carpet since it has feet

We have space heaters in the kids' rooms and keep the rest of the house cold.

@yin: It works out better than cranking up the whole house right? I also like that I can bring the space heater into the bathroom for her baths, etc!
honeydew / 7917 posts
@snowjewelz: yes! We have an old house with original windows. Heating the house is pricey. We lower the house temp to 60 at night and keep the kids' rooms warmer at 68. We also bring the heater into the bathroom too!

My parents run a space heater if its super cold, but most of the time they just wear slippers in the house and use electric blankets for their bed. They figure if they are warm in bed, that's all that matters.

@yin: sweet! there's def some draft from our windows, so this sounds like the perfect plan!

our old house was drafty and we had crappy on wall heaters that basically did nothing, so we got a space heater for DD's room and just wore sweaters and socks in the rest of the house... our house was freezing though! like 50/60s, so the space heater was a must.

@BandDmommy: I was going to ask about the safety of them. I've been warned about the danger of space heaters over the years and have become paranoid b/c of it, but don't really know if true!

we have been using space heaters since dd was born so 3 years and i def like that vs heating the house. their rooms are small so if we turn the heat on in the house, their rooms heat up fast and too much. so we've been using space heaters with climate control so it just maintains a temp. i actually think it costs more for the space heater here but our electricity rates are high.

Definitely space heater is cheaper. Just make sure to get one that shuts off automatically after reaching a certain temp and I think oscillating is a key feature worth paying for!

@Happygal: I've heard too many stories of fires to ever use one. But each to their own.

@BandDmommy: we use the Dyson heat fan for the kids' rooms, which is bladeless and turns off as soon as it falls over (which can happen with kids). It turns on/off according to what the temp is set to.
wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
@gingerbebe: yeah, if it's just us, we just suck it up! but now that we have DD we want to make sure she is warm
@kodybear: yes the climate control ones are what we're looking to get!
@BandDmommy: @Happygal: I def agree that is always a certain risk to these things.. The one we want does have a lot of good safety features like auto shut off, tip over protection, cool touch, etc.
@Freckles: that thing is amazing! just can't swing it hehe.

@snowjewelz: we have this one: http://www.amazon.com/Vornado-Vortex-Automatic-Climate-Control/dp/B000GLHVZA/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top?ie=UTF8
i definitely recommend it! dd has been using hers for 3 years and its still going strong. it has the tip over protection, cool touch, shutoff features, etc. i would love the dyson bladeless heater if it wasn't $$$, esp since we'd need 2. haha someday maybe..
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
@snowjewelz: not sure how much the one you're looking at is. But have you considered a factory refurbished Dyson mode?
honeydew / 7444 posts
@regberadaisy: @snowjewelz: floor model for us during a store closing sale. At first I was against it bc of the price but DH really pushed for it (and he is a cheap ass)!
But the Vornado one recommended looks good!
honeydew / 7444 posts
@BandDmommy: oh I didn't mean for you just that there are safe options for space heaters.
wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
@kodybear: exact brand I'm looking at!
@regberadaisy: eh, still a lot.. The Vornado one we're looking at is like $140 and I have Amazon credit!
@Freckles: Sweeeet! Yeah, I think the Vornado ones aren't bad!
