That would hurt my feelings a lot. Though it makes sense, she could use the same logic to stay there for your shower (after all this is her niece of nephew that she isn't celebrating, and I'm assuming you were there for her shower etc).

I would be upset but also understand at the same time.

My older sister didn't come to my baby shower or LO's baptism or my older daughter's first communion...pretty much anything having to do with anyonelse she misses.

Just know even if she's not there you will be surrounded by people that love you.

I guess I'm kind of used to it. My sister was at my shower, but traveling when lo was born so she didn't meet her until she was a month old. She also traveled during los first birthday which was the same weekend as sils baby shower. She obviously knew my due date, and she knew the dates of the other parties before booking the trips.

We are just at different stages in life though. We have different priorities. I can't expect her to do everything around my schedule.

i'm sorry this situation is happening to you and your sister! i think it's totally normal to be bummed about it and wish that things could be different

i guess for me i might be dissapointed, but as it was, none of my side of the family were able to come to my shower either (also live across the country) and really in the end it was just a small party LO actually arriving/christmas/birthdays ended up being more important and fun in the end.

i guess your sister is in a tough place and kind of just has to make her nuclear family priority in this case. i guess i understand where she is coming from, but i totally understand why you would feel dissapointed hopefully she can make it up to you in the future!!

Oh, also-- I find it a bit odd that they MUST take a full two week trip. The only time I've ever taken a 2 week vacation was my honeymoon!

@Foodnerd81: ha, I've never taken a two week trip! Even my trip to Ireland was only 8 days I think!

I would feel bummed about it, because I'm close to my sister. But I agree about the reading between the lines. My entire family actually had my baby shower...without ME! Heh, it was what it was, but I couldn't be there because I had to work. (My family has, essentially, a full family reunion at Easter every year. This is when all the baby showers, bridal showers, etc. happen for as long as I can remember. So I wasn't shocked or disappointed. Made me a little sad on that day, though.)

After reading the text conversation, I would definitely be upset if I were you- after all, she admitted that she forgot. However, it's not unnatural for people to place the needs of their own family (husband and child) over the needs of their adult siblings. It sounds like it was tough for her to plan with all of the factors she has in play... Hopefully she'll send a nice gift to make up for it?
(From her point of view, I can kind of understand- its just a party after all. It's not a wedding, or the birth of the baby, or one of those "big deal" moments in life- I skip baby showers all the time if I have something more important going on, I'm not going to rearrange my life for a two hour affair of crudités and cupcakes. I know it's your sister, and I know that "omgitsmyONLYbabyshower!!" But try to have a little perspective.)

My younger sister missed my shower, and I was definitely bummed out by it. Different situation though- her very close friend had died a couple nights before and she didn't feel up to being around people. So I understood. I think missing for a vacation would annoy me, but at the same time, there may be more going on that she doesn't want to/can't tell you about, like others have said, and if it really is the only time they can go on their family vacation, well, she should send a nice present!
