My husband used one of DD's bowl to feed our temporary cat. He seems to not understand why after its been on the floor and used as a cat bowl it can't be put back into her daily rotation. Would you be cool with that?

I'd throw it in the dishwasher and go right on using it. Why can't it go back in her rotation?

I mean, I wouldn't make a habit out of it but as long as it were going to be santiized, I wouldn't bat an eye at it.
cantaloupe / 6751 posts
As long as it's washed in hot soapy water or run through the dishwasher , I don't think it's a problem. It's more of a mental ick factor than anything.
grapefruit / 4455 posts
I get that it's kind of gross to think about but I would just put it in the dishwasher and sanitize it- same as all the pacis we dropped in random places and were probably exposed to more germs than that. I wouldn't want to keep doing that though..just personal preference.
persimmon / 1005 posts
Something about plastic makes it grosser to me. I see where you're coming from, if it were me I'd probably just toss it. Yes, it can be sanitized but it's still kind of yuck.
squash / 13199 posts
@katsupgirl: I would not give that back to my child to eat from sorry. that would upset me a ton. I would toss it for sure because plastic doesn't wash that easily. I have tupperware that retains flavors, smells and food stains even after being washed and sanitized.
nectarine / 2280 posts
Unfortunately I don't have a dishwasher. I'm also not a cat person. I've been known to do sketchy things when I had my dog. But that was my dog and I knew where he'd been.
My husband will be happy to hear he isn't the crazy one. I'm still totally skeezed by it though. If he wanted to eat out of it fine but not baby girl.
@Mrsbells: that's part of my reasoning with the plastic. I think I was more upset cause he knows how finicky I am about stuff.
Always nice to get some third party objective perspective. Thanks all!

@katsupgirl: I'm not a cat person at all, either! I had a horrible, and mean cat that I spent many years loving and caring for and he was a jerk lol. So I definitely get the mental ick factor...
But I probably would still use it- even without a dishwasher, sanitize by immersing in very hot, soapy water.
But it's also just a plastic bowl, easily replaced, yes?
apricot / 431 posts
@katsupgirl: I despise cats so I'm with you. If that was me, that bowl would be in the trash already
pomelo / 5621 posts
Part of me thinks it's just a bowl, wash and keep using. But the other part of me says never to be used for food again.
I think even knowing it was cleaned all I would think about is the cat eating out of it every time it was used.
persimmon / 1461 posts
that bowl would be going right in the bin. I think cats and I think toxoplasmosis and all kinds of icky cat bum things. plastic bowls usually have scratches on the surface which can trap germs. blerrgh.
its kinda like having a spoon that you use to feed dogs their can of chow.... would you eat your cereal with it? hahaha
bananas / 9227 posts
I'd probably designate that bowl for outdoor play after that. It'll live in the sandbox.
pear / 1737 posts
With a plastic bowl, yes and I have a cat. With stainless steel or ceramic, wouldn't give it a second thought.
wonderful pea / 17279 posts
My husband would have the exact same reaction as you @katsupgirl: . He mandates all of the babies things be washed by hand and not touch the inside of the sink or the dish sponge.
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
Probably, yes I would be annoyed, on the principle.
It's a plastic bowl, I'd just recycle it.
persimmon / 1101 posts
It wouldn't bother me at all, but if it grosses you out it grosses you out---toss it!
Men...I caught my husband cleaning dog barf with our dish washing sponge once. He didn't understand the problem. Sigh!
coconut / 8472 posts
I wouldn't be thrilled if we had a better option and he chose not to use it. If he needed a bowl in a pinch and chose a cheap plastic one, even if usually intended for the baby, I'd be more forgiving. I'd probably wash it and see if it seemed acceptably clean. If not, I'd toss it.
pomelo / 5573 posts
Because it's plastic and cheap, I'd probably just throw it away, but I also wouldn't have a problem washing and reusing it.
@FannyMae: Um...yes? We have two cats, and we use forks from our regular utensil set to scoop out their food, and then wash them. Do you really have a special dog food spoon?
nectarine / 2243 posts
This wouldn't bother me in the slightest. Nor my husband. Soap is a really effective cleansing agent. Bleach is pretty effective too if you wanted to go there. My kid has a higher chance of getting toxoplasmosis from playing in the backyard than from my exclusively indoor cats.
If I was easily grossed out by something like this (and I'm not) I'd imagine we'd be a no plastic household anyway (which we aren't).
watermelon / 14467 posts
@FannyMae: Yes, because I wash the fork every single time it's used and put it right back in the drawer with our other forks.
@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Does he also do all the baby's dishes?
@erinbaderin: Agreed.
pomelo / 5084 posts
@katsupgirl: Considering our dogs lick the inside of DS's lips on the daily ... no, this would not bother me. But we may be in the minority hahaha.
wonderful pea / 17279 posts
@avivoca: When he's home he washes them more than me because he swears he does it better. *eye roll*
watermelon / 14467 posts
@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: My husband made the mistake of telling me that I didn't wash the bottle nipples well enough and now it's his job and he's sad about that.
pomegranate / 3411 posts
i would wash and use with no problem. pretty much since my babies started crawling and getting into everything, i realize things like this are harmless and it is not possible to control everything they touch or put in their mouth, so a washed cat bowl would be considered not even remotely icky to me.
The one that really grosses me out is letting my kids near the cat litter though. I had a friend over once and her kid dropped his apple in vicinity of our cat litter. I went to take it from him and she said to let him keep it!
apricot / 360 posts
Since it's plastic I probably wouldn't use it to eat out of again. I'd keep it just for the cat then toss when it's no longer needed.
I don't think it would be too gross to wash and reuse, but I personally wouldn't see myself doing that. I'm sure my husband would though.
pomegranate / 3872 posts
I'd never use it for lo again. I'm an admitted germaphobe though! I don't put plastic in the dishwasher and just wouldn't be comfortable with lo eating out of it. Cats also carry diseases that can be transmitted to humans so (I might be totally off but!) I think even a dr might tell you not to share dishes/utensils as best practice.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21628 posts
Nope. My DD has open mouthed kissed my dog on several occasions though... Stuff like that just doesn't bother me.
pomegranate / 3375 posts
This wouldn't bother me at all. I likely wouldn't reuse for the kid (well, if it was wet food), but since the bowl probably costs $0.85, I don't really see it as a loss.
I've thrown Tupperware away after I found moldy food in it because it seems forever unclean. I'm ok with cutting my losses sometimes.
nectarine / 2530 posts
DH would never ever do this, because he's skeeved about stuff like this. For me, because it's plastic, I wouldn't reuse it for my kid. I do reuse things like silverware (on the rare occasion where I get wet food) as long as it goes through the dishwasher. I just think of plastic as retaining things (smells, colors, etc) while silverware, china, etc is more easily sanitized. It's probably all in my head, though ;).
persimmon / 1095 posts
Who cares? Just wash it and it's fine to us. My toddler even gets her fork back after she's dropped it on the floor and our dog gets a lick in.
nectarine / 2280 posts
@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: that's definitely me! I don't use the regular sponge on the baby stuff.
@littlejoy: I'm cool with not using it again and it becoming a backyard toy for sand and dirt.
Part of my issue is that it's not my cat. When I had a dog? We were sharing plates! but that was my dog and my choice for just me.
@wrkbrk: @Mrs. Pickle:
pear / 1521 posts
I think if you were sharing your plate with your dog then yes it is an overreaction to be upset with your husband over this.
I would not blink an eye, though we do have a dedicated dog food fork
wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
I would be like ummm could you not find another bowl? But then I'd also just wash and re-use.
