DH and I both grew up without a dishwasher in our homes, and never had one when we lived on our own. We cook and entertain A LOT but our first home didn't have a dishwasher.
Is a dishwasher a dealbreaker when house-hunting?

If we could put one in, not a deal breaker. But if there just wasn't room to ever add one, it would be a deal breaker for us. DH doesn't hand wash dishes, so it would be a major cause of arguments and not worth it.

Yeah, I think so. We never used a dishwasher growing up, but now that I have LO, it's been such a time saver!

@Foodnerd81: ditto...We'd have to be able to add one. There's no way I'd be up for handwashing every single dish, and DH wouldn't do it either.

At this point, after owning two homes? YES. Especially with all of the bottles and pump parts!!

It wouldn't be a dealbreaker for me as long as there was space to put one in. Or, there are always portable dishwashers too!

if there was a space one could be added, then i wouldn't mind, but if it was just going to be a situation where there wasn't one & there wasn't a place to add one unless you tore out the whole kitchen, then no. i won't even rent somewhere without a dishwasher, because it's important to me, i've never not had one. but i know there are people that barely use theirs.

As long as it could be added, not a deal breaker. It'd probably be my first purchase for the house though!!

we have one and never use it! so not for us...i almost wish we didn't have it and it was more storage

@sarbear: My grandmother uses hers as a dish rack and storage! She just keeps things in there after they dry.

oh dear god, as long as it could be added without much fuss. I grew up without a dishwasher, and holy moly. AWFUL.

I agree, if it could be added easily/relatively easily, it'd be no biggie, but man...washing dishes by hand gets old FAST.

Ugh we are renting and our place doesn't have one. I thought I would be okay with it.... I miss having one!! DH does the dishes after I cook and he doesn't always do a thorough job.
So whenever we do buy a house, it either has to already have one or space to put one.

I dont really care about dishwashers. we have one in our apartment now and have never used it. Washing by hand is so much easier in my opinion and gets everything cleaner than rinsing everything, loading, unloading a dishwasher

I couldn't do it now. I never used to use it much when I lived alone, but now we use it multiple times a week. I wash dishes anyway; but love the sanitation factor

Only if we could add one. It would be done within a couple days of moving in too.

I didn't have one growing up and hardly used mine living alone. Wouldn't be a dealbreaker for me.

Not a dealbreaker. We grew up not having one. Our house right now has one but we've never used it once. It's used to store all our tupperware!

I never used dishwashers until a couple months ago. I could do without, but it's so convenient.

If I'm buying I'd want to have one or have the option of installing one.
But I also say this as a renter who has lived in an apartment with a dishwasher for 2 years and have NEVER used it. And now we're moving. Oh well.

It was a dealbreaker if there was no space for a dishwasher. Our last house didn't have one, and it was such a PITA -- especially on holidays. And DH isn't the most attentive when it comes to cleaning a dish, so I would always have to go back through and rewash -- sometimes after everything had been put away as I was pulling dishes out to set the table for company or something. Thankfully, our house actually came with a dishwasher already installed.

We use our dishwasher ALL the time, so it would be a dealbreaker if we couldn't put one in. Unless I was absolutely in LOVE with the house....

It would be a deal breaker for us. I can't imagine really loving a house without one.

At this point, heck no!!! I'd be doing dishes for hours each day without one!

@caffeinated: we bought a house without a dishwasher last summer! but there was a cutout waiting to add one. we kept saying we would wait until we really felt like we *needed* it to buy it, and ended up getting it in march i think? it was after LO was born and I had returned to work and it is such a timesaver! but i guess it depends on your personal cleaning preference.

As long as the hook-ups/space were there to install our own dishwasher it wouldn't be a deal breaker for me. Our old apartment had a dishwasher but no laundry, our townhouse has laundry but no dishwasher. I don't miss the dishwasher that much at all as long as I'm on top of the dishes as they are created.
