If I liked them, I would just stop by and let them know they were being too loud and could they p,ease turn it down.

No, probably not. If I knew them enough to "like" them I'd probably just pop over or call them myself and explain the situation/ask them to keep it down, especially since 11pm is past most city's quiet time it's not unreasonable.

If your city is similar to mine, noise complaints are like a priority 3 (no immediate danger to life or property), which means you'll be passed over anytime a 1 or 2 comes in, so it could be a while before they come shush them.

I don't know my neighbors well but I'd call anonymously if I had to! Sorry!

Oh wow. No I would not. I would only call if there was some crime being committed or I suspected there was child abuse or neglect. If I called the cops in London for a party at 11pm they would laugh me off the phone.

I would try to talk to them and resort to the cops if it didn't settle down.

DH would go and ask them nicely to be quiet. And then if they didn't listen..... he would call the cops. And then we'd go over the next day and tell them how awful it was that some neighbor called the cops on them and say all they had to do was talk to them nicely like we did so they wouldn't think it was us

If it was a repeat thing, or if someone was in danger, then I would call. But I'm a little too passive(?) to actually do anything if it were a one-time thing.

Definitely no. I am of the strong opinion that you should speak to the neighbors and only involve the police with true emergencies. I hope that you at least called 311 instead of 911

@sea_bass: I thought that myself, that they'd laugh you off the phone over here!! I once called the Police at 2am because a group of teens who had been hanging out in the park opposite my house for hours, shouting and squealing, had gotten really rowdy - I'd heard a bottle smash and I think a fight had broken out. The lady I spoke to at my local station said the Police may come and move them on but not to bet on it as they had real crimes to deal with! Gasp!

In answer to the question, no, I wouldn't. If it was a one time thing, Id let it go - unless it was really late (read early hrs of morning) and really loud (read thumping music that hadn't been turned down) or if it was getting out of hand (read windows smashing etc). If it happened frequently, Id go over and speak to the neighbours.

That said, I currently don't have a sleeping baby and my tolerance levels may well change once I do. I really feel for you - if nothing else, Id be quietly fuming!

No, I definitely would not escalate it to involving the police unless they were doing it all the time. It was 11pm, so while it's late, its not THAT late, and it was a Saturday. I would have just went over and asked them to keep it down a bit. If they are nice neighbors that you like, they probably wouldn't have been a pain about it.
