If you could change your major do you think you would? I'm a stay at home mom now, so I'm not too concerned, but when I was in the working world I wished I had an Ag economics major rather than my accounting.tax major. I wanted a job in the farm industry so bad but I was never considered based on my lack of farm schooling (despite living on and owning a small farm myself!).

for sure. I think I would have stuck with some science like biology instead of switching to business (Management information systems). I switched to business bc I didn't know what I wanted to do and that seemed to be safe. But now that I really look at what I learned in school for that major, it really was nothing. I still can't really explain what it was to people!

Yes! Well...yes AND no...I loved my major and everything I learned but it's useless w/o a masters. I wish I'd been able to continue on and gotten a masters but that's not an option for me at this point.
I majored in psychology and wish I'd gotten my masters in school psych (my initial plan).

Yes, I did history and was thinking of becoming a secondary education teacher. I then got my masters in higher education and work in the field now. Its not a high paying field, I wish I switched it to finance or CS

Yes, well I woudl never have switched to begin with. I was a nursing major and switched to marketing because it was "easier" in my stupid 19 year old mind. Now I wish I was a nurse...and get jealous of all my nursing friends as I'm stuck behind a desk.

Yes, definitely! The kind of social work I specialize in is extremely difficult now that I have LO. I am working on a dietetics degree now.

Maybe. I majored in psychology too, and it made it really hard to get a job out of college. I ended up finding a job I really liked, but it took a long time and some luck! I will encourage (but not force) C to major in something a little more employable.

I'm glad I majored in math, but I wish I had completed my music history major instead of just minoring in it.

No, I don't think so. I think I'm fairly smart with computers and sometimes I wish I was in the computer industry but I really sucked at the computer programing class I took. I'm pretty happy with the Biology major with psych concentration.

I wouldn't have (though I graduated fairly recently, so we'll see if I go back and change my mind later!). I chose an "unemployable", liberal arts major--religion--but I chose it not only because I knew it was my passion and I loved studying it, but I knew what I wanted to do with it after I graduated: go to seminary. You can have pretty much any undergraduate degree before seminary, but I definitely think my religion background prepared me for masters-level religious studies and that I'm ahead of the game because of it. Because of that, I'll encourage our daughter to major in a field she loves even if it's not "profitable"--as long as she has a plan for what to do with it afterwards and plans to pursue graduate school if it's not immediately employable.

I would have chosen something that would make part-time work easier to find. Though, that's partially a problem in my area, not just my degree.

I loved my major, but I'm not so jazzed on my graduate degree. I'm struggling now to find work in my chosen field. Undergrad major was environmental science, grad degree is in public policy.

Probably. My undergrad degree was in political science. I don't really consider myself a political scientist. What good was that??

@DillonLion: I was a philosophy major too! I loved it at the time but I am not sure it was the most practical thing . No regrets about my college experience though.
I now have an MSW so I learned to be more practical later on I guess...

I learned a lot from the major I switched to (psychology) and my MSEd, but I wish I'd toughed it out and stuck with my original major, bioengineering.

Nope, I still use my Zoology and Animal Science majors most days working part time. I wish I had added in some education classes too, but I do a lot of continuing education in that, so it hasn't hurt me.

No I don't think so. I was a computer science major and I enjoy the work that I do. I probably would have taken more stats classes though and maybe considered a graduate degree in data science had I known where the industry was heading.

I love my degree computer science but I want to get a masters in child development and data analysis now. And maybe a secondary education degree. I jut want to do everything.

I have a very generic Communications degree but I love it and I loved my courses while in college. In my area, a Communications degree is pretty employable, particularly with decent work experience.
However, I wish I'd chosen a different minor. I ended up with a minor in Journalism because it was a common combo for Communications majors at my school. I never intended to go into a journalism field. I wish I'd taken the opportunity to either get a little more education in business or human resources, or to explore women's studies or geriatrics. Hind sight is 20-20, though, and at 19 and 20 I had no clue I would be interested in any of those things down the road.

For sure! I enjoyed my major (Fine Arts - Painting) while in school but it didn't really pan out career wise (DUH!). I wish I would have stuck with something more technical or something in the sciences. I always did really well in those areas and even went back to school to try and pursue an engineering degree for a little while (it just became too much to try and be full-time student while trying to work full time and think about getting married buying a house). It took a little while but I've worked my way up and now I feel like I'm going in a good direction in my current position. I just wish I would have thought more about it before deciding on a major - serious advice I will pass along to my child(ren).

Sometimes... I have a bachelor of commerce with a major in marketing and I work in my field. But my DH went to school for the same length of time as I did at the same university, but for engineering.. and he literally makes 4 time as much as I do!! So sometimes I think I should have tried that. However, not sure I would have been successful! haha

Yes. I was a fine arts major, and although I've worked in a museum, I didn't do anything I'd consider career worthy. I'm currently staying at home with my 6 month old, but will be looking for work soon, and don't even want to think about the dreaded job search again. I feel that if I had a career, I could more easily find a job and not wonder what exactly I'd be doing next.
I'd probably stick to my original math (and science) major and be an engineer.

Maybe. I'm the rare art historian (BA and MA) that actually works in the field (an art museum anyway). I love what I do, and I'm getting great training that will hopefully let me advance, budget permitting, but I've been there for almost 4 years, am in a low level position and don't make much. I graduated with my MA in 2009, which was a terrible time to enter the job market. Sometimes I think it would be easier (I would be "farther along") if I had pursued a job, rather than a passion.

@lulibee: lol twinsees! I worked in a museum too!!! I work in cancer research now mostly admin work for different studies. After I left the whole 'art world' I worked with kids, then customer service/front desk which landed me working in a cancer treatment clinic with the help of some connections.

Absolutely. I'm home now with the kids, but when I want go back to work I will definitely need to change directions and get an MA in something else. I really wish I had thought about what job I would actually want/enjoy from the get go.

omg, yes. I loved doing my classes, but the degree itself is useless.
if I could do it again I would do something more specific, like accounting, nursing, law, radiation therapy, compsci, engineering, radiology... something that lends itself easily to a specific career. no one cares about a bachelors degree in linguistics!

Sometimes. I have a Criminology Major/Psychology Minor and do work in my field. I've been a victim' services worker, 911 call taker during schooling, and now am a program coordinator, and I enjoy my job and am usually glad that I do "important" work. But kind of wish I would have picked a more lucrative field, and just helped people in my spare time.

Nah, I'm happy with my double in genetics and Russian. I'm trying to transition away from a career in lab work to one in a museum, though. Had I known that, I'd have done some different internships or something.

I chose a great one for me, finance. I also have my masters in information systems, which is a perfect combo for my job as a business project manager for a bank.
My degree paid for itself by the time I was 27, so I think I made a great decision.
