My coworker was telling me about his brother's divorce that was recently finalized. His brother is upset because his ex wife has no plans of changing her last name back to her maiden name. She is an elementary school principal and many people know by Ms Last Name.
Just curious, if you took DH's last name...would you keep it if you got a divorce? I think I would change it back but who knows!

My sisters both kept their married last names so they could have the same last name as the kids.

Now that we have a child on the way I would keep his last name so I continued to have the same last name as my child.
I don't understand why the husband cares if she keeps it. Why do men think they get an opinion on what we do with our names?!

I'd probably switch back. My MIL has been divorced for 25 years and still uses FILs name, I always thought it was odd considering they've been divorced four times longer than they were married and she hates FIL.

I would have changed it back if I didn't have my LO yet, but since she's here I'd want the same last name as her and I'd keep it.

It was such a pain to change that I'll never change it again. I'd like to keep the same name as my son, too. A really great extra perk, if he ever got remarried maybe it would bother the new wife to always be reminded that I was Mrs. Ourlastname first, muahaha.

I haven't my name personally. But if I were in that situation I would just change it back. My MIL never changed hers and did not remarry but my FIL did. I think it is kinda of weird that she is still Mrs. ____ and the new wife is the same.

I'd keep it. It's my name now. I never had any special ties to my last name before and with LO we will have the same last name. And to add to that question: if I was ever remarried I probably wouldn't change my name again.
I didn't like it that my sister and I had different last names than our little brothers and mom. And now my mom has ANOTHER last name and it feels so foreign.

It depends on how long we'd been married, if we got divorced tomorrow I would change it back. Once I had a LO (with his last name) I would keep it forever (unless I remarried). If we got divorced after like 20 years, I would still keep it because i'd have been his last name for all of my adult life.

I should have mentioned that they were married almost 20 years and have twins that just finished their first year of college so they are 18 or 19!

OH yeah at that point I'd keep it. My MIL got divorced 30 years ago but had 2 kids so kept her married name this whole time so she'd share a name with her kids.

I would probably leave it to match my child's last name if our kids were still young. If they were older, than I would possibly look into switching it back.

I've known people who have gone both ways. It seems like if there are kids involved, they'll tend to keep their ex's name, otherwise many change it back. I have one friend who had a 14 letter german maiden name and after her divorce kept her ex's simple 5 letter last name!

I don't know. My MIL still has her ex's name (H's last name) but they had 3 kids and had been married for almost 20 years. So, yeah, if we got divorced before kids I'm pretty sure I'd change it, but I don't know if I would after.
But if I ever got remarried, I think I would have to change it. I would think a lot of husbands would have a problem with their wife still having her ex-husband's name. -
Most people I know keep their married last names, especially if they had kids together.

I did take my last name back when I got divorced even though we had a child together.
I don't regret my choice to do so. I'm now remarried so our last names are different anyway. -
My mom kept her married name since it was the same name as her children. I've never had the same last name as my eldest daughter, so it isn't a deciding factor. Honestly, I would probably not change my name again, it's too much work. I have professional licenses to deal with....

I'm not sure what I would do. I like my married name more than maiden name but if I were to get divorced, I don't know if I want the reminder that I'm still his wife. I would probably change it back. I don't have any kids so i don't have to worry about that.
